Alpine set-up/blowng speakers
Monday, May 16, 2005 12:24 PM
I have an alpine 9833 with type r speakers in the front and back (refer to profile). I am underpowering the speakers and i have an amp now just not installed yet. I was wondering if i am blowing speakers because they underpowered or could they have been wired wrong? they were professionally installed and they have already replaced the speakers once so before i get my amp installed i would like to know what the problem might be. also my amp is 5 channel 450 w rms i was wondering if it would be able to power a jl w3v2 without any problems

what type of amp is? how many watts a ch x 4 and for the sub?

also you might have a clippin single going to the type r's thats why they keep blowing. do they sound really clear? also what do you have your bass set at?

The amp is a 5 channel, 4 for the speakers and one for the amp. The speakers sound fine until I blow them. I had the bass (MX on Alpine) on first when I got them and I'd turn it up to about 19(24 max) and they would blow. I blew the back two and one in the front. Then I got it replaced and never would turn it up past 20 and they blew again. The guy at the audio shop said he thinks they are underpowered and pulling DC from the battery because the amp can't convert it all to AC.

underpowering them wont hurt them. a poor install will. sounds like they didnt adjust your amp gains right, and i'd suggest not using any type of bass boost , the one on the radio should be okay but dont try and use that with any bass boost on your amp.

id take it back to the shop and have one of the other guys look at it, because obviously the guy you talked to is a bit lacking in his knowledge.

It may be clipping. The best way to find out is to hook up an oscilloscope and take a look at the signal. Running at 80% power off of HU with bass boost on could very well cause clipping -- I have a JVC HU and I usually don't run it higher than 65% power (finishing installing a 60w x4 rms and infinity reference components tomorrow so that will change).

Basically with clipping it changes part of the smooth AC wave to DC current which causes a lot of heat in the coil and can cause the wires to break. The AC waves give the coils a chance to cool off, and also cause air to flow around them.

If you don't have a scope, see if you can borrow one from someone. They are an invaluable tool with electronics work. I got my cheap 20MHz scope on Ebay. The thing is probably older than me but it works just like new and is perfect for audio signals because they don't usually go much above 20KHz (so the scope can measure 1,000 times faster signals than audio)
