So I've had the following system for a good 2 years now. 2002 Cav, Sony HU + 4 channel amp, Infinity speakers front and back wired to the amp, and have replaced all the stock wiring.
Suddenly, starting this winter, I'd experience the following: While driving around, music playing, all of a sudden I'd hear a loud POP (for lack of a better term) from my speakers, and the music would stop. The HU seems to be running, as all its lights are on and all the buttons work. The LEDs on my amp are at normal operation also. Just no music.
Turning off the HU at that time would make a "click" sound come from the speakers, and turning it back on would make the same POP, followed by silence. I turned it on and off, but it did the same thing, ad nauseum.
After about 20 minutes of driving or so, everything goes back to normal. If I had the HU on, then all of a sudden music would start playing again. Leaving the car parked for a long while seems to help, too.
I'm a total audio noob, so I don't even know where to start troubleshooting something like this.

It "Sounds" like your amps protective mode is kicking in (for a lack of a better term). I know that RFs have this. Did you mess around with the wiring? Does it do it after it's been running for a while (thermal shut down)? Or does it do it after driving over a bump (possibly bad wiring)?

It's definitely not thermal, because it sometimes its already in pop mode as soon as I turn on the car.
It has done it after a bump once in while, but I've rechecked all the external wiring. The ground from the amp is grounded to bare metal, and the power line is good to go.

Hmm. On the way to my final exam today

it did it again, but this time it triggered the offset light. Does this mean that its a power problem?

check the rca cables. thats what was happening with mine, they were touching the metal part of the amp sometimes and i was getting the same thing you were.
I had that same sound from a line-out only deck (Alpine CDA-7995) hooked up to the stock Monsoon amp and speakers... wrong level for the amp, so every time you'd push a button or change tracks or whatever it produced a very loud POP that I thought was going to blow the speakers...
I know that probably won't help AT ALL but it made mine pop

Sorry to hijack thread, just have to ask lenko a quick question....
what do you mean you had the amp set at the "wrong level for the amp?" My stereo is doing the popping thing right now. Thanks.
you got a wiring issue....check the ground and the power first....sounds really like rca plug problems.
My problem is (was) the Alpine 7995 is a pre-out only deck... so the level is totally wrong for the Monsoon amp (which is expecting a speaker-level input). Not only was it REALLY quiet, but it had that pop with every single button push.
When I installed my new Alpine 9753 deck... speaker level outputs... to the Monsoon deck... sounded perfect again!! Actually, a bit too loud, since I can't control the gain on the Monsoon amp without the factory head unit... but I don't have the factory head unit... so until I figure out the kind of signal the Monsoon amp is watching for (on the purple Gain Control wire) I'll have to live with my volume knob going between 0-8... since it's REALLY loud at 8!!!

So I'm pretty sure the problem is with the amp now. Speakers went into pop mode, so I was playing around with the amp. Tugging on the wires etc. and I got fed up so I whacked the amp with my hand :0 Sound came back on right away. Repeated it again later on during the week when it happened again, and it fixed the problem also.
Not sure now whether I should open up the amp and look for loose grounds or something, as I've never disassembled an amp before.

Have you found a solution yet? I'm having the same problem

I got an Alpine 9833 and I got the GMCO harness made by Peripheral. The Monsoon wiring plugs directly into adapters from the harness and I don't have a flipping clue where to look or what to look at (audio-illiterate). Help me pleassssssse

SOLUTION FOUND!!
I installed 2 "ground loop isolators" that I bought from Wal-mart and now everything works fine. The popping sound has disappeared for good. Yeah!!!

Anthrax... how/what did you do?
