12 years on the car and you have to replace the tank i would say new steel tank and rino line it and you will get another 12+ years out of it 98 has too much stuff thats different

Really? The plastic tanks are different?? I have a plastic tank from a 2000 sunfire that i was going to use in my 98....good thing i ready this before I went to swap...i thought they would direct swap??

sending unit is smaller on 2000+. it was been said that some 99s have the smaller sending unit with the correct ohms for the 99- gauge but i think it hasent been done yet.
I don't recall the sending unit assembly being any different (size-wise) at the top... I put a 2001 sender into a 98 metal tank with no issues on fitment...
However... the differences are in the vent hoses between 98 and 99... as the EVAP can is at the front of the car on up-to-98 cars.. and in the back on 99+ cars... so the extra vent pipe is not even there on the 98. You may run into vapor-lock issues if you cap it off and cause a pressure problem... but you won't know til you try it.
Steel tanks are 15.2 gallons capacity.
Plastic tanks are 14.1 gallons capacity.
