Hello my name is markus from kansas city i recently replaced my bad motor with a fresh motor i own a 1997 cavalier ls i replaced the engine with a 1998 pontiac sunfire engine that only has 80000 miles on it i dropped it in everything bolted up i also got the wiring harness everything was plugged in the car started but only for a second or two then died i smell fuel any idea before i pull the motor back out i need help and advice on this one
check the crankshaft position system or the anti theft
Erik Packard
i replaced that some one told me that i bought the wrong engine for my car but if that was true would still fit and bolt up
did you change the computer? is your theft light on?
the light is not on and i used the computer that was attached to the harness basically i went from a 96-97 motor to a pontiac sunfire 98 motor
its the same thing the 97 pcm will work with the 98+ 2200 the only years you cant swap with the 2200 are the 95 96 the 97 pcm will work with that engine and are there any lights on or anything else also did you swap the throttle cables and everything else when you did the swap

Actually, the 97-99 PCM are all the same.
OP - you need to relearn the passlock, or there's an issue with your old computer.
Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

How does that work? Dont the 97 engines lack a cam position sensor or something like that.

Wait.... lemmie see if I understand here.
You have a 97?
You got the engine from a 98?
You also got a harness and computer for the 98, and plugged that into your car?
i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick
Try the passlock procedure. I did and it worked. I went from a 97 2.2 auto w/3spd tran to a 99 2.2 auto w/4spd tran. swaped the engine, tran, harness, and pcm. runs great now. Before i did the passlock procedure, the car would start and die before it could even idle. Just try it before you do anything else. Good luck , I hope this helps.
Im kinda new to this how do i do the passlock procedure on my car and also i was looking to change the auto to a manual would the trans mission have anything to do with it not starting.
The car im going to pull all of my parts off of is a 1998 Cavalier that has the 2200 motor in can i take that transmission out of that car and install it on my 97 what would the difference be if any between the years.
