Tear down to replace headgasket on 96' Z24
Monday, March 01, 2010 9:41 PM
Im looking for help on how to find instructions on tear down to reach the head gasket. Im looking at just replacing it with a stock gasket unless you guys have better ideas. Any help is appricated.

Alittle info on the car, the temp gets to about 100 Cs while idling. I just picked up the car for 650 bucks about 2 weeks ago. Its been sitting since then but while idleing it over heats, driving im not sure how it does. Its got a stock exhaust system and it has a burpy sound to it. If you give it gas the rpms seems to drop hard, like quick. Im not sure what else to think other then head gasket. I know the car also needs a main coolent line.

which engine??

2.2L or quad 4?

2.2L is simple and easy 100 bucks and you will ahve it done, in about 3 hours of labor.

quad 4 is a nightmare and will take days to do this unless you work on it non stop no breaks etc.

i know many mechanicw who wont evne touch a quad 4

i have done a few and wow... they are insane to replace anything on, since timing chain system has to be removed to do anything to them virtually which involves removing the balancer and engine mount system and so much more..

good luck......

First time I did a 2.2 took me about 4-4.5 hours i have that down to 3-3.5 now.
I just did my second 2.4 I also replaced the water pump, and added the secret cam swap as well as replace the timing set with a new one hade it done in about 8 hours total. it is not that bad just take your time.

^^ Said it's a Z24 = 2.4l

As was mentioned, get a Haynes manual, it has all the info you'll need, down to torque specs. Real good resource to have.

Before you replace head gasket tho, have you you replaced thermostat? If it's just over heating... start with the simple stuff first. Is it burning coolant? Any smoke from tailpipe? Do you have oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil?

if it ends up being the headgasket, dont just replace that. do a new thermo, water pump, timing set and all tensioners.

The Q4 family is easy to work on. Dont let incompetent mechanics convince you otherwise. A head gasket in a 2.4 can be done in 4 hours with only hand tools. Its not that complicated. Hell, I can assemble, install, and drive away with a 2.4 in about 13 hours (well maybe not right now since its been a while since I have worked on my car).
