2000 2.2L Cavalier - What engine years match?

That's the short question.

The long story....My rear main seal leak finally caught up with my oil consumption. The engine has locked and, with 160k miles, I'm not wild about rebuilding it since this is it's 2nd hard issue (broken timing chain about 30k miles ago was 1st).

I want to stay with the same engine design, not looking to up performance, just get back on the road with some degree of dependability. It's a 2000 Cavalier with the 2.2L OHV engine and single point fuel injection. What other years are potential exact matches for this engine.

Thanks for your help!

years 98-02 2.2 will work with your car and sfi stands for sequential port fuel injection not single port, if you want more power rebuild the one thats locked up i have built up my 2.2 with importperformanceparts.com parts and andysautosport.com if your looking for power out of that engine the camshaft and the higher compression pistons are what really helped mine out

Sadly, its more of a need to swap it quickly to get it up and running but I'm considering hanging onto the old block to do the upgrades you're talking about and swap it back in later. And you're right, I mis-spoke. It's a Throttle body fuel injection (I think) and definitely not anything fancier.

if it's a 2000, it's got 4 injectors, one in each intake runner. they did away with the TBI way back. it's alot fancier than you think, SFI means at idle-2000 rpm, each cylinder's injector fires independently, instead of in batch fire (as was the case from 1995 [or even earlier, i cant remember at the moment]) which would fire two injectors at once, all the time.

I would really think that doing a rebuild would be preferable. I mean wouldnt you rather have a minty fresh basically brand new motor rather than some old ass beaten up Junk Yard Special of unknown condition thats sat there and not been turned over for god knows how long.

I would, Leafy. But other necessities are crying for fulfillment too, so down and dirty is the short term solution. Then I'll see about the original engine as the "thoughtful" rebuild. I'm not willing to assume its in decent enough shape because the lead up problem to the rear main seal giving out was the timing chain tearing in half after the tensioner broke loose. BTW, that rear main has been leaking a good 20k miles. There's a pretty good chance the crank is going to need a great deal of TLC all by itself.

Rich, it does have the coil packs that support the firing of paired cylinders. But I'm reasonably sure the only injector is in the intake manifold. It's nearly identical to a 1990 Cavalier I had with the same basic engine, ie 2.2L Overhead valve but the accessories are not the same. I'll be looking deeper into it this next weekend so I'll let you know if I've crossed my memories up.

I have a 2003 Cavalier with the ecotec with a bad rear main seal. Im supposed to get it fixed sometime this week. you can probably use any 2.2 OHV from 98-2002. for 2003 it was discontinued and replaced with the ecotec.

jl, i hate to say it, but step away from the car. if you cant look at it and see within 2 seconds it has 4 injectors, you do not need to be working on it.

but to answer your post question, any OHV engine from 98 to 02 will drop right in.

JL, I don't know what you're looking at, but I have the 2.2L OHV in my 97, and it CLEARLY is MPFI/SFI. SFI= Sequential Fuel Injection. It says so right on the cover of your engine, 2200 SFI. Rich Grayo is right, if you can't tell it has 4 injectors then you have no business trying to make repairs yourself. Here are some pictures I just took. Injectors are circled in red.
