Combo switch interchangeable?

Hi, I just joined this site and hoping i get some good info for the future! I searched but didn't find a close answer, I just bought a 99 Cav RS for a daily driver, with the only thing wrong being the turn signals do not work. the hazard lights do function and I hear the relay clicking, but the combo switch does not even light up the arrows on the dash. So my buddy went around looking in his garage and remembered he still had a brand new switch sitting around, the only problem being it was not a cruise control equipped switch, and my new RS has cruise control. We plug it in anyways, thinking what the hell maybe we don't need cruise, and my signals STILL do not work!! Anybody think it's because the cruise control wiring is not plugged in, or does it even matter?? or am I looking for another culprit? any help is appreciated!! all bulbs are good, 10a fuse is good, relay clicks and hazards flash, no arrows on dash with combo switch moved....can only one part of the flasher be bad? we are stumped!

Have you tried your flasher? I am thinking that the combo switch should work fine even if it's a different one, but you never know. There are things like that which do not interchange on our cars. It may even vary by year (GM is good like that--LOL), but I would try your flasher first. They're only a few bucks.

My understanding is there is only one flasher for this model year, with turn signal and hazards integrated? the neon green box was hard enough to find under the dash, is there maybe another one lurking somewhere? I might just try replacing it for sh!ts and grins, even though it clicks with the hazards...

I'm not sure about the 99's, but I know both of my 95's had two flashers, one for the turn signals, one for the hazzards. The 99 is an electronic odd-ball year in a few ways, so it's possible that yours is different.

I've swapped combination switches from 95 to 05... so they're all interchangeable. Cruise or not, the wiring is separate for the two. The problem is most likely your flasher.

I didn't know 95 used a separate flasher for the hazard and the signals. The rest 96-05 all use a single integrated flasher, has two outputs - one for the signals, one for the hazards. It's under the dash on the right side of the steering column.

I have seen the output for the signals crap out, but the hazards work just fine. That's not restricted to J-body cars either... seen it on a few GM's now.

thanks guys you were right, it was the flasher. just the turn signal circuit side of the relay crapped out. now we're back in business, but I have a DRL relay now buzzing around and the indicator flashes. related? I don't know but looks like another electrical adventure!
