2000 Z24 convertible top... gears not correctly aligned
Monday, January 25, 2010 12:47 PM
i have an '00 Z24 convertible, and the gears that move the top up and down are not correctly aligned on the passenger side. they are perfect on the driver's side but there is just a bit of space between the gears on the passenger side, so when you try to lower or raise the top with the power handle thing, the teeth slip. i have attached a picture to give you an idea of what i am talking about.

i know it doesn't look like much of a gap, but it's more than the other side and enough for the teeth to slip. the smaller gear (the one on the motor itself) seems to be pretty much fixed in it's position and i don't see a way to move or adjust it. i can't see a way to adjust the larger gear either, but i'd have to image that there is some way to adjust it somehow, i just can't tell exactly how it's done.

anyone know how to fix this?

thanks for the link to the manual... that's a LOT to read. i scanned through it real quick and didn't really see anything pertaining to adjusting those gears, but i'll keep reading.

if anyone else has experienced a similar issue with the gears, i'd like to know what you did to fix it.

thanks

read through the manual some more and there really isn't anything pertaining to the adjustment of those gears, just removal procedures. i'm the only one who ever had this type of problem?

i don't think it's an issue that washers could fix... the problem is the the gears are not seating together enough in an up and down or "north and south" fashion, not an issue of one gear sticking out further than the other and thus requiring a shim.

I have a '99 vert and have played with the motors and such. There is no adjustment of the gears. In looking at a spare motor and bracket set that I have, I can only visualize this happening if (1) the motor is loose or there is enough slop in the motor mounting holes to allow the motor to slip away from the main gear or (2) the motor bracket is loose or there has been damage due to accident or something. I'd loosen all the mounting bolts for the motor and bracket (not easy) and see if you can pull the motor up slightly into a position of better gear mesh. If so, and you can tighten eveything back up again, maybe that will hold. Good Luck - Mark

if you can remove it, you can adjust it.

id try this. if the larger gear's mounting point has slipped or been bored out, then youll have to figure out a way to mount it tightly in the correct position. if its mounted fine, then you can maybe drill out where its bolted to the car to allow it to slide closer to the smaller gear.
good luck and let us know when you fix it so itll be recorded for the next person who has the problem.
