For some reason, I am drawing a blank here. Is the 2.4 an interference engine? I am looking to buy one with a HO cams and some other goodies. But aparantly, the chain recently snapped. It has been replaced and the car is driving again, Im just concerned about some internal damage.
Thanx in advance for the info.
Valves and pistons will make not so sweet love in the 2.4.
its not looking good darren. the chances of them not making contact are about the same odds as the maple leafs winning the cup this year

i've always wondered the same thing darren, eco interference to?
Might have some bent valves man. I dunno though, I've seen some DSM's that lost a timing belt and ran just fine with a new timing belt.
i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick
The 2.4 s for sure a interference motor. Crank has to be in the 12:15 position to allow the valves to clear. My next questions would be when did the chain break (which is very odd to start). Was the car idling, being driven etc...

Im not sure, I THINK it was driving.
Gary, yes the 2.2 eco is an interference engine also, which means, as soon as the chain goes in a lot of cases so does your engine along with it. As far as the chain goes, i heard the timing chain was supposed to be good for the life of the engine. What the average lifespan of an ecotec is, i couldn't tell ya but i'm sure that's provided you are religious with oil changes etc.
Shooff i think on engines with a timing belt it's usually just a matter of replacing the belt and hola your on your way again no damage done. I was about to say i'd never heard of any interference engines that didn't have a chain, but then i remembered we had an old ford escort once that had the 2.0 and it had a timing belt and was interference. And when the timing belt broke on that thing, that engine was done.
doesn't the neon 2L have a belt its an interferance motor too i believe
also they said the chains life span is aslong as the engine life span?? probably meaning the chain will break then you buy a new engine

Yep the neon with the 2.4l is a interference motor.
I bought one a couple yrs ago, with a broken belt, luckly for me,the guy i bought it off of was just moving it around his body shop when the belt broke.
So the head and cylinders were ok,but needless to say i picked it up cheap.
Well aparantly now it just skipped a tooth. I am calling the guy tonight to find out exactly what happened.
If it just skipped a tooth, not an issue at all.
When doing my water pump, I missed the exhaust timing by one tooth and the car ran but also like sh*t.
My Paseo which has a belt drive is an interference engine and my Porsche 944 is an interference engine and also uses a timing belt, not a chain.
Good luck though with it.
