Oxygen sensor trouble

Hi

I bought a cavalier z24 2000 convertible with an automatic transmission on january 2008. On july 2008 I had problems with a check engine light which the code said was de oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter, sensor replaced. By February 2009 same engine light, same thing, oxygen sensor replaced. This past july I got the same code with the variable that the car now has a strong gasoline smell, the car now revs about 1000 rpm above normal when i push on the gas, but when I stop the car revs start going up and down as the engine sounds like its choking. I replaced the sensor and the car went well for about a week and a half. Now Im getting the same problem, took it back to the mechanic who had replaced the sensors before, because eventually something else is wrong and the sensor going bad is just a symptom. He checked current to the sensor and found everything ok. He then scanned the computer and said it works well for a couple of minutes then it ¨zeroes out¨ which I dot know exactly what it means. What could be wrong and how can i fix it, do i need to change the computer? is there something else i can check before doing so.

Mods to the car are an intake, headers, grounding wires, and a magnaflow exhaust in case that has something to do.
