I haven't seen this type of an axle on any of the jbody's around here.
It came off of a 96' Sunfire SE with a 5speed 2.4.
The shaft runs from the output on the tranny, bolts up to the motor block and then uses the same size axel as on the drivers side.
I was wondering if theres any difference between this and the other axle that goes straight from the tranny to the wheel.

Difference is torque steer lol... one is equal length, the other is not.
i doubt its orginal because according to my parts list the 3rd gens never had equal lenght shafts
probably added on from a 2nd gen

From what I've seen, all the early 3rd gens had those... though what year it changed in, I couldn't tell ya. My 98 had the uneven length shafts, so it's 97 at the latest.
my 95 2.2 had uneven and both my 97 se and GT have uneven

just checked car-part.com and its a 95 2.3 5spd and 96-97 2.4 5spd thing
learn something new everyday now t he thing that gets me is what cars got them cause my 97 GT was an october 96 built date and it never had it and it was a loaded model just missing auto trans
wonder if its an early convertable thing

I knew it was a 2.4L thing... I'd never seen it on a 2.2L.
Not sure on the 'verts... all the ones I've seen and owned were auto's.... well, to start at least
Well its off of a Sunfire SE with the 2.4 manual in it.

my 98 z24 had one with the intermediate shaft like that.
Both 95 Z's I've had came with those and all the 2.2 cars came with uneven length.
As far as I know there is no provision in the block to bolt it to on the 2.2. On both of my v6 swaps I just went with a 2.2 axle on that side instead.
^^^^ thats odd my 95z didnt have that, nor did my 97 both were 5 speeds?
Yep both were 5 speeds.
There is a chance that someone replaced your 95s with an uneven length at some point.
Anybody know what size bolt they use to mount to the 2.4 block?
I thought I grabbed them off of the parts car but none of the bolts I have are working.

I wonder if it was a mexico vs lordstown thing, because there is a lot of conflicting dates up there. I have a 98 manual Z and i have un-equal length half shafts. The @!#$ty thing is I just bought a new passenger half shaft to put in. If i could have bought one with an intermediate shaft, I will be pissed!
Go Go OG Traction!!
on a 98 you can put the equal length one in its 00+ that gets tricky as the shaft length changed the 96-99 is 5/8 longer then 00+
all my js were mexico and they were un even and my current 99 Zed is ohio and it was un even but 99 didn't come with them IIRC
