I was wondering how to remove the 2200 ohc from an 01 cavalier. I was thinking from the bottom, but decided to remove it from the top and need help. Thanks

Top has always worked for me, just unbolt the brake master cylinder so you can move it out of the way.

Yank it out the bottom, Subframe and all

That's how I do it

I would, but the new motor is out of a sunfire with a 4 speed and the cav. has a 3 speed.

There is no such thing as a 2200 ohc. The 2200 is a push rod motor.

I've always gone out the top. Once everything is unhooked, fuel lines exhaust, electrical etc remove the starter and flexwheel bolts attach the hoist and remove the passenger side mounts. Then put a scissor jack under the tranny and remove all the bellhousing bolts and start lifting the engine with the hoist until the flywheel touches the bellhousing then lift the tranny until you cant any further then lift the engine. I go back and forth between the two until the tranny is on enough of an angle that the flywheel clears the tranny. Its easier with an auto cause the flexplate is thinner than a flywheel and there is no clutch in the way.

Out the bottom is easier but the top is faster and less work, just takes a little wiggling around to make it work.

get a load leveler for the engine hoist. Tilt the engine side up high, and yank it out.

Do you have the 4 speed donor vehicle? If so, I'd be doing the full swap, tranny and all.

To get the motor out, I recomend yanking the hood.

Undo exhaust mani (i removed back to the cat)
Take off intake tubing
Then disconnect the wiring harness (remember to label everything as it comes off for easy re-install)
Pull the axles
Take off A/C compressor (if equiped) leaving everything hooked up)
Remove P/S pump (leaving everything hooked up), and hang out of the way....youll have to move it a few times while getting everything out of the way.
remove @!#$er cables
remove throttle cable (and cruise control cable if equiped)
take the master loose from the booster (leave all lines connected, you will need to "swing" it out of the way)
Drain your fluids
hook up engine hoist (i really recomend spending the $20 for a leveler)
undo motor/trans mounts

yank.

you can choose to take off the intake mani to give you a little extra room, but thats optional.

if I undo the j-bend, I shouldn't have to unbolt to the cat. should I? I am also taking the ac compressor with the motor. od I have to remove the fuel lines going to the rail?

autos should always come out the top if you leaving the trans in there no point is taking the subframe and everything off the autos just pull out the 5spds you have to put vasiline or KY on the frame rail and wiggle it out

my V6 with motor and trans together went in the top twice with no issues

FAWK THE BOTTOM

I'm guessing that you meant to put this in your other post.

I hope you're able to laugh after fighting with an engine all day to find out you missed a motor mount.
