08 cobalt sedan motor swap into 95-99 cavalier
Friday, February 20, 2009 3:20 PM
so i have the complete donor car of an 08 cobalt sedan 4dr automatic, and i want to put it into a 3rd gen cavalier.. should i just pull EVERYTHING out of the cobalt (including wiring harness etc.) and swap it into the cav or is this swap possible? and just to note i dont care about swapping everything including the full wiring harness if i must to make it work perfect, if im going to do this i want to do it right so if i sell the car next year to buy a supra tt as planned* its a good selling point. Also one more thing, if the swaps possible could i take the whole front suspension out of the cobalt and put it into the cav without TOO much extra work? time isnt really an issue it could take a weekend or 5 weekends i have the time just want it to work properly.
thanks in advance, Colton

Ok first off what year cavalier. Second now someone correct me if im wrong but i think the L61 in the cav and the L61 in the cobalt use different reluctor wheels and sensors so it wont work if thats no the case then yes that engine will go into a cav however the harness and pcm will not. Unless you swap everything and I do mean eerything from the engine and trans harness to the body harness and BCM. This will basicly turn you cavi into a cobalt. As for the suspension forget it, wont work. Hope i cleared some stuff up but if your looking to do an ECO swap your better off finding a donor J cause your gonna need an ECO trans as well.

Just get rid of it and get a 03-05 cavalier/sunfire and swap everything. It'll be easier and you'll basically get the same engine.

switch your car interior wiring and tank over to a 00+ then put an eco out of a 02-05 cavalier and your done don't worry about a cobalt,

PS theres a search feature built into this board this topic has been beaten to death numerous times

alright well i already have the 08 cobalt donor car so your saying i would be better off swapping it into a 00+ ? if so can i still use everything from the cobalt and basically turn the 2000 cav into a cobalt? and what sort of problems will i run into?

No were saying you need to go get an ECO donor car like one in a junk yard or whatever. Things your gonna need are an ECO motor ECO trans an ECO wire harness all these things you need to get from a J a Cobalt will not work you could probably use the motor but again im not sure on that.

nope, Red, you were right on the relucter wheel thing.

to the OP, check squirels thread in the performance section, he's using an LSJ bottom end if I recall. it's the closest thing you'll get to what you're wanting to do.

Although this topic has been brought up a ton of times, you guys are missing the OP's point. He is talking about taking all of the wiring from the donor car he already has, and swapping it over. He's not talking about trying to get the Cobalt engine to work with the Cav electronics. And he is asking this because he already has the donor car. Not because he's thinking about finding one.

To answer the question, I'm not sure if the Cav BCM/Cluster will see the exact same signal from the Cobalt ECM. Although they are the same protocol, GM tends to change the actual data stream definitions between every vehicle, for no good reason. As far as the suspension, forget it. It's not close enough. You would need to do quite a bit of modding/fabbing.

The 08 Cobalt uses GM High Speed Lan (can) so communication is totally different.
You will need to understand Data Line communication to wire correctly (even with complete harness from donor, the 08 needs a complete dataline and even the steering column missing will cause a no start)

I think the easiest would be to go with a Standalone PCM like DTA or Haltec and Custom Gauges.
