well first off id say i have a 97 cav 2.2 LN2. and its got about 178xxx miles on it and it randomly overheats. the thermostat is new full
of coolant (replaced the dexclog with peak 50 50 ) and water pump is a brand new one from gm no coolant in the oil but a no smell
from the tail pipe and no visible leaks im stumped
any help would be greatly apreciated \
thanks
how bad of an overheat is it?
is the fan coming on when it's supposed to.
check your coolant hoses, specially around the clamps....mine had a small leak and was dripping onto another part and not the ground.....it doesn't take much of a gap either considering the pressure in the lines
dexcool... 95+ gm's should really only use any brand that is dexcool coolant.
im guessing the coolant system needs to be burped.
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.
Any updates?
I have the same problem in my sunfire, same year engine and everything. New water pump and new radiator, flushed the coolant system numerous times, thermostat is good. As far as I can tell my fan is coming on when it's supposed to, but I'm considering a
bypass switch so I can turn it on earlier, maybe you could give that a shot? It seems like they made it turn on a little later than it should.
PS: Fill out your profile.
I have had that Problem as well. But Mine was the PCM in my 98 sunfire 2.2l. And I got a new one on EBAY for $99.00.
And I had to get it reprogrammed and that fix it temp. but I am back to the same problem now.
But a think to Checks and Replace would be the Grounding Cables next to the Frame of the engine. It could be just a Bad or lose connection to that?
But I am Have other problems now with this car. I am just thinking of running a Turbo and Just Driving the damn thing into a pole, As it is ICE out and I can get the car Insurance and Say that the was running perfect Prior. Just Do to how much money this Car Is, It seem like its just a bad money pit. As everything is so damn expensive. I am Just glad I was lucky to find that PCM Module on Ebay. for as cheap as it was.
Guys before you go driving into a pole or something, make sure that you are actually over heating and not just a bad cluster or sensor. Best bet is to check it with a scan tool to see what the ecm is reading. or check it with one of those laser pointer temp (surface temp) gauge , on or near the upper hose spout. If your not sure your fan is working , unplug the coolant temp sensor/ switch and see if the fan turns on. 2 wire sensor above the bell housing.
Another thing I have ran into recently is sticky thermostats. Guys are going out and buying 3 dollar thermostats cause they are a deal and easy to change, they tell their friends how they changed a thermostat in their car by themselves. Congrats! Now if your putting a 3 dollar part on your car instead of a 7 dollar part, which one do you think will work better. And is it really worth the couple of dollars when it over heats and pops the head gasket or cracks the head. Same goes for oil and oil filter. If people saw what an engine bearing consists of and how it works, they would pay more attention to the oil they are running. Thats another topic, any way, cheaper isnt always better, more so in car repairs.

^ MacFrugal's law strikes again! And that law is: "I cannot afford to buy cheap!"
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
If you cant afford to fix it correctly the first time then whats the point. Changing parts more than once is just plain stupid, not to mention buying the same part twice. If its under warranty, you still have to change the same part again, and when you send that part back, they will more than likely analize it to see if they can make it last just a little longer, well at least till the warranty is up. If not , then just offer a shorter term warranty and / or a cheaper price. See where Im going with this. Any one that has changed a j body wheel bearing (more than once) knows this has to be true.
Just try to get out of the habbit of buying the cheapest, cause the cheapest could just be a waste of money and time.
A good repair shop knows this is how you get a good name in the buisness, so if you need something done ask around locally, see who is recommended the most. Now they wont be the cheapest Ill tell you that now, but not as much as a dealer.

turns out to be a clog in the resivoir and i flushed all of the dex clog out and did long life green antifreeze
dex cool is really bad for that
Yeah, the seals on the later-model engines are designed to work with Dex-Cool. Having run it in a pre-D.C. year vehicle, I've learned that's true because sure enough: The waterpump seals failed & I was forced to change it & switch back ol' green ethyline-glycol.

green always brings home the gold never fails
