Gotta pull out the 2.2L from my '02 Cavalier and want to make it as simple as possible.I would like to leave the tranny in by unbolting it and pulling the trans back for
clearance then pulling the engine out from the top.A few people that i've asked suggested to remove it from the bottom.What do you guys suggest,either way?

i've done it both ways. if u got a cherry picker then go top. If u have access to a lift then do it from the bottom
if you take off everything (head, accessories) before removing it, AND you've taken the whole front end off, (radiator, front bumper etc) you can slide it out from the front. more work, obviously.

Through the top is easiest and quickest.
I just did mine this weekend out the top. Make sure to take off the pass side wheel to get the bolts by the end of the transmission. I kinda forgot about those before I went up.
Also there is a bolt on the back side of the block below the header that is a pain to get to without some long extentions.

I took the engine out from the top
with the car on jack stands, I took the transmission off first - out through the bottom - and then i pulled the engine out from above
to put the engine and transmission back in I did the following
using an engine crane i lowered the engine down into the engine bay - all the way down until it sat on a couple of 2x8 sleepers on the floor
I then mated the transmission to the engine
The with the engine crane i hoisted the engine/transmission unit up from the bottom into place
It worked quite well since it was the first time and i was working alone
I took engine and trans out on both my swaps. All it took was removal of the brake booster, and out they came. Easiest IMO!

i have pulled them all from the top even with the trans attached i even put my 3800 with the trans attached in from the top
top for it all unless you have access to a hoist but if you don't wanna drop the engine cradle/ subframe what ever you wanna call it and rack then top for suredon't think 1 is more work then the other i think they would be the same

The ABS unit was in the way and i had an aversion to messing around with that
the Haynes manual said that I could loosen it off and move it out of the way but the metal lines do not appear to be all that flexible
I could have disconnected it an taken it our but I gather the ABS is a bear to bleed out with some pretty sophisticated gear - or have i been misinformed

Those lines will move, just take the 2 15mm nuts holding the master in place and push it off to the side. Hold it back with a bungee cord.
wow..i just raised the car up, unhooked all the hoses,wires,sensors etc, and unbolted the lower mounts...rolled a flat cart under the engine and lowered the car down till the oil pan rested on the cart...unbolted the top engine and tranny mount then rasied the car back up in the air..this left the engine/tranny setting on the cart which i just wheeled out from under it
this is by far my favorite method...however , as said before..if you dont have a lift your only real option is out the top...and i still suggest taking them out as a unit

I made a list (hand written) of every major step on the way out. Pulled my 98 2200 out the top with 5 sp manual with a the car on jack stands using a engine lift. I could scan and e-mail the list if you're interested.
Most people don't have access to the professional lift tools and such so we pull them from the top. I honestly don't know what's the fastest, but it not really that hard.
I suggest prepare 1 day by draining fluids etc, pull the wheeels and half-shafts, tie back, cap and seal everything up, then chain it up the next day, unbolt the mounts and pull the whole damn thing out, you may want just any extra hand to help guide the jack while you personally guide the engine.
I bought and engine crane - I pushed the boat out and bought one that use compressed air to power the cylinder on the lifting (you can hand pump it as well)
with this crane I can let the crane/lift raise the engine/transmission up and I can use my hands to guide it as it comes without having to pump away at the same time
it was a bit extravagant but what the heck; it is only money
