Scenario:
1998 Chevrolet Cavalier with metal fuel tank that developped a leak (Quebec + salt = rusted out tank)
Got my hands on a front end smashed 2005 Pontiac Sunfire (Canadian market) with a plastic fuel tank and the pump.
Basicly, I'm looking for the fuel system schematic and Vref values to see if the pumps are interchangable (and if not, what differs as everything is adaptable)
I want to know before going under the car if I need to swap the fuel pump assembly or if everything is plug and play.
Last time I did a Cavalier/Sunfire fuel tank job was way back in early 2005 on a then 210000km 1996 2.4 Sunfire (now at 430000km)
Also, I did use the search and found no post revelant.
Furthermore, if possible, this thread could be used as future reference for tank conversions.
as far as i have found most of the newer gm pumps are the same from 1998+ im using a 2200 pump on my 3800 and it runs well
Hi Mike, well, I went ahead and got both pumps out. both identical.
So I dropped the 98 pump in the 05 tank using the 05 gasket and retainer.
why would you use the older pump?

plugs in??? lol less work
So they are not identical? Or is the pump the same but the electronics not?
------------------------------------------------------------
They are identical. Reason I used the 98 pump is simple:
1. It works
2. Easier, I didn't bother to disconect any hoses.
Took two hours for two guys.

I believe the sender reads differently on 00+ cars.
i heard 98 are 0-90 ohm and 99+ are 40-250 but car-parts says 98-99 are interchangable
you can't use the 00+ pumps you can use the tank and swap out the pump and sender thats what i'm doin as my 2.4L pump can't supply my 3800SC fast enough

Is it going to be easier down the road when you have to replace the pump?.. You'll think "Man I should've just disconnected the hoses and put the newer pump in" haha

Original pump @ 327000km !
The 430000km Sunfire also has it's original pump.
There's a secret to long live pumps
i would have just used tht pump too its not a preventitave maintenance thing if it works just put it back in
i'm running a cav pump on my 3800 doesn't flow what i need but its got almost 400 000km on it

So is there anything really of value to puttin gin a plastic tank other than durability to the element. Such as weight reduction?
The proper way of using the word seen. It is not I seen it that would be I saw it. He has seen the car is the right way to use the word. English class is Cool. By the way thats my sig
the metal tank pump doesn't sit right in the plastic tank.
