problem being, the header for the 98+ ohv has smaller, misaligned ports compared to the 97- header. so while it bolts up, it wont flow well. you need a header made specifically for the 2.2, not the 2200. get a pacesetter.

the older J's use a "muffler bearing" ,,,,, on the outlet of the manifold which the exhaust from there will have a ball flange. the newer ones like the 98 use a flat gasket on the pipe and they use a flex joint by the bottom of the oil pan. pretty much they changed the way they compensated for engine movement in the exhaust right around 98. so if you change out your downpipe to the newer one and use a flex joint, (flex joints also available on ebay if you custom make a down pipe) you can use the newer header.

PaceSetter and all their copies use the same header, so they interchange. The down pipe is what's different. The way the cat mounts (two bolt flange'97 & ealier, or welded '98 & later) and the extra hanger mount (rod before the cat) on the '98+ are the differences.

So far everyone thats posted is correct...the ports are aligned slightly different (about 1/8 inch overlap) and there are some mounting differences.

Bottom line...any 2.2/2200 header will flow better than the stock iron manifold, but you need one for your year for best fit and performance.

Header for 1999-Current Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire with 2.2 liter OVH engine.

Featuring the same industry leading elements and quality assembly that puts our Quad Four header ahead of all others in the field.

Constructed of heavy 14 gauge aluminized steel pipe, mandrel bent, with heavy flanges and quality welds for long life. Tri-Y header design for these applications is exclusive to Iperformance, ensuring the widest power band and more usable horsepower and torque for the best acceleration at the track or on the street. 1 1/2 inch primary pipes, 2 inch secondary pipes, and 2 1/2 inch collector, for 26% more flow than any other exhaust system for these cars on the market. Two piece construction for easiest installation.

Woven steel flexible joint ensures that the twisting of the engine will not loosen the bolts or crack the pipes, far superior to competitor's designs without this feature which are susceptible to these problems. These headers have two (2) primary O2 sensor fittings. One fitting is mounted high, in the OEM position and meters from two exhaust ports while the second is mounted at the collector where it meters from all four exhaust ports for maximum accuracy. A plug bolt and copper washer is supplied to close off the unused sensor fitting.

Secondary O2 sensor fitting after the catalytic converter as per GM design. Large, high flow, 2 1/2 inch inside diameter Carsound (Magnaflow brand) catalytic converter included, making this the only complete header available for these cars which complies with emissions laws. Header not available without the catalytic converter. We use only Carsound/Magnaflow brand catalytic converters with our headers because lesser quality catalytic converters are not compatible with the ODB II emissions systems of these vehicles and will trigger error codes that will flash the check engine light. 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent, aluminized exhaust pipe for 26% more flow than any other exhaust header for these cars and long service life. High exhaust flow capacity make this header ideal for supercharged and nitrous applications as well as all naturally aspirated engines from mild to wild.

Header offered only as complete unit, not available as individual parts. Offered only as complete unit, not available as individual parts. All hardware required for installation included: nuts, bolts, washers, lock washers, lock, and clamp needed to assemble the three pieces of the header assembly.

Upper copper header gasket, and lower steel and fiber composite catalytic converter gasket also included. Available with optional ceramic coating . Our ceramic coating is done by Reliable Metal Finishing using Tech Line brand ceramic coatings. Tech Line is the industry leader in ceramic coatings supplying materials to the majority of companies offering ceramic coating service for automotive applications.

For headers, we use a Tri-Coat system consisting of MCS Insulating Coating inside the pipe and MCS Insulating Coating under MCX Cermakrome on the outside of the pipe. The MCS Insulating Coating withstands over 2,400 degrees and drastically reduces under hood temperatures. The MCX Cermakrome combines high heat tolerance and maximum heat insulation with the most durable finish available for superior weather and abrasion resistance. The multiple coatings combine for a finish unmatched by the offerings of any other header manufacturer anywhere.

Please note that the use of header wraps, on any header, accelerates the deterioration of the steel by causing heat fatigue, and will in all cases result in rapid, premature failure of a header.

Please Note: This header has been designed specifically for 99-Current model 2.2 liter OHV engines. Pre 1999 Chevrolet 2.2 liter OHV engines have a different port pattern in the head with different port size and placement on the head face. Pre 1999 2.2 liter OHV engines use a different header flange pattern. Our header for 99-Current 2.2 liter OHV engines is the only header on the market designed specifically for the 99-Current port pattern.

As can be easily seen in this picture of a 1995-97 OEM Chevrolet 2.2 liter OHV exhaust manifold flange placed over a 1999-Current OEM Chevrolet 2,2 liter OHV exhaust manifold flange, while the bolt holes to mount the manifold or header line up, the ports do not. The ports miss completely overlapping by 5/16 inch (.3125 inch) on the top edge and 3/16 inch (.1875 inch) on the lower edge. This mismatch in port placement results in blocking off over 30% of the exhaust port when a 1995-97 header or manifold is used with a 1999-Current head, or when a 1999-Current header or manifold is used with a 1995-1997 head.

Our header flange for the port pattern of the 99-Current 2.2 liter OHV engine and does not fit the 95-97 model engines. 95-97 2.2 liter OHV engine ports are placed higher on the head. Headers made to fit the 95-97 engines will not fit the 99-Current engines without causing significant turbulence in the exhaust erroneously listing a header to fit all 2.2 liter OHV engines, they have not checked the port pattern and are selling you something that does not fit correctly. Our header is the only header designed specifically for the 99-Current 2.2 liter OHV engine.

As can be plainly seen, the ports of the 95-97 2.2 liter OHV engine header do not match up with the ports in the head of the 99-Current 2.2 liter OHV engine, which causes disruption and turbulence in the exhaust flow, increasing back pressure and drastically decreasing exhaust flow efficiency, decreasing power output by the engine. Please Note: This header will not fit the 1998 2.2 liter OHV engine because it is designed to fit the cars with the 1999-Current exhaust down pipe and exhaust system. The 1998 model cars use a different down pipe and different exhaust system. This header can not be used with 1998 model cars unless it is used with our 1996-98 Quad Four cat back exhaust system instead of the 2.2 liter OHV cat back exhaust system.

Plain steel header shown, bluish discoloration of the steel is due to the heat of welding the header together. An excellent upgrade replacement for owners headers by RK Sport, RSM Motorsports, Mantapart, or Pacesetter. Please be sure to specify year of car on order form.

well, thats partly correct. the pacesetter actually uses two completely different flanges, and their header for the 98+ works just fine. AND, it's carb certified. so, to recap:

pacesster makes two completely different flanges, one for the 95-97 2.2l ln2, and one for the 98-02 2200.
the pacesetter is carb certified meaning:
