piston slap is something all 2.2l OHV cars suffer from. its caused by the pistons wobbling in their bores because the skirts are too small. no real way to fix it, the problem has been know to persist even after a complete rebuild. then again, i could be completely wrong, with what's causing the noise, but thats what i've come to understand about these engines.

Never heard of the piston slap, but timing chain tensioner is a very common problem with these engines. I just picked up a chain, tensioner and guides today to replace mine.

These motors are notorious for lifter tap, especially with high mileage and/or rocker arm conversions. Mine was real bad (249K miles on stock lifters & Crane rockers) till I changed the lifters a few weeks ago. The timing chain can rattle alot when worn also, if you haven't chainged it yet, it would be a good idea to do so before the chain breaks.

I'd have to agree with MadJack on the lifter tap. For your noise from the header, probably a leaky gasket. Especially if you used a paper gasket that came with the header. Those typically blow very quickly.

As far as the never ending pile of bull@!#$, I dunno what to think about that. One of your previous posts in this thread mentioned about driving the car up to 100. It takes some time for a 2200 car to get up to that speed, which pretty much shows that you're driving a lot of time at WOT, and if I'd have to guess you're probably not being real nice to it in general. When you beat on a car, it beats on your wallet. I know this because of the number of things I've fixed from beating on mine. Besides, with that many miles on it, you can't expect it to be perfect... you have to know that something's gonna need fixed.

yes...i know....i cant say much when she hasent broke down at all intell now.....iv always changed the oil on time and always shell v-power and iv had her at one year old....its a damn good car.... ilove it.......hey the lifters are under the head and under the anti rotation brackets???????? and do i ever come in contact with the cam??????? im doing the roller rocker set and ill do the lifters also but i dont want 2 mess with the timing.....

You won't have to mess with the timing(unless your doing the timing chain set), but you do have to remove the head.

is removing the head a pain in the ass????you have to take the header and intake manifold off along with the throttle cables???????

mad jack...can i take a 2.3l ho 180hp engine and stick in the 2200 or is this out of the way?????if so then how hard is it to put a ld9 2.4 in her?????i was told that it will drop right in if iv got an automatic is thi true???iv always liked the 2200 because no one els is putting time and money into it but everyone has a 2.4 thats fast....my goal is to take the 2200 and put the hahns racecraft turbo kit to start then upgrade it .ill get 171whp to start and take it up to 350whp so i can piss all over the guys that think that the 2200 is crap..........its not about the easy way its about the road less traviled.......

You can put any motor you like in the car. the 2.4 will be an easy swap, just need all the parts for it, engine trans wiring and upper motor mount, etc. No motor (besides the 2.3 and 2.4 i think) can swap transmissions, you need a trans with a bellhousing for THAT motor.

I like the idea about the "road less traveled", it is what Im doing. You will need to do more than just turbo the car to get 350whp, headwork, a bottom end and a nice tune are a few things.

Removing the head is relatively easy, header, intake manifold, alternator, upper radiator line, the bolts that hold the head on the left side (to the PS pump), and the headbolts, along with any wiring that is in the way, and the head will pull off. Im forgetting the rockers need to come off too, along with the pushrods. -- I have done it in about 2 hours total (thats head off, replace 2 lifters (when i should have done all 8), head back on, engine start).

i know im starting with the turbo kit...ill rebuild the 2200 from the inside out the boost the hell out of it....i have a 2001 2200 the ps pumps not on the head the bolts to the head are under the rockers and next to the exhaust manifold "header" ...ill have to take the intake manifold, header, valve caver, altenator off and move the coil packs....then under the head are 2 anti rotation brackets with 4 lifters under each one....you take the bolt out of each anti rotation bracket and squiez them together to pull them out and take a magnet to pull the lifters out and replace them....im going to put all new lifters and roller rockers on and at the same time ile get a new head gasket..........once i get the head off i will take it to a machien shop for a good port and polish also.....thanx

Bingo! I did this a few weeks ago, but I replaced all 8 of my lifters. I was a little more meticulous and did it on a Saturdy afternoon and Sunday morning. (I'm just anal about doing my work, so it takes me longer! Too long for any shop.)

Just to be pulling the whole motor and doing a head, cam and timing set swap.

I was scared the first time I took it apart, so I took 2 days like you did, mon and tuesday morning. I have pulled the head a bunch of times since, and its like clockwork for me(as it would be for anyone that has worked on the OHV), the 2 hours doing it is after doing it maybe eight or ten times prior haha not to mention that I needed to have the car running to go to work 100 miles away the next morning ;P

Working on the OHV is kinda like, fishing with dynomite

OHV FTW!

I'm just anal about cleaning everything! (especially when it's my DD) What I'm working on at the moment and anything I can't normally reach. I've pulled/replaced 2.2L/2200 OHV heads abuot seven times, plus I just pulled another one for my self yesterday! I've done about a dozen other types of motors also.

My ex's son's GF got one of those 2 hour head R&Rs, shortly before i went overseas 4 years ago, my first 2.2 OHV head ('92 Corsica). She did the same thing my ex did to my Cavi, ignored the cooling issues, till the HG blew. This one kept driving though! When I pulled that head, it was twisted as a pretzel! You didn't need a straight edge to see it was warped!

That's the timing chain. The tensioner is worn out. Replace the whole set, the chain, cam and crank gears, tensioner and damper. You'll need the oil pan gasket and the timing cover gasket. You can do the R&R through the passenger wheel well.

iv had the timing chain done about 6 months ago......the hole set....i asked some one what they think it was he sead it sounded like the alominum down pipe making rattle sounds ...as if it was amplifiing the head...???? can this be tru?????it seams rite to me becouse it happend after the header......
