I found a 2.2l 5 speed out of a 95 cavalier z22 and everything is there i was just wondering would it fit? The guy who owned it before the guy i am getting it from said it would. Is this true? (it would be going into a 1998 Sunfire gt)

why go from a 2.4 ld9 to the 2.2 ohv ? i say just look for a replacement 2.4
Wouldn't the 95 be ODB1? Or was it the 2.3 that was still ODB1 in '95? Never can remember which. But like others have said....you will hate life going from a 2.4 down to the old 2.2.
Well if a 2.4 comes along the same price as the 2.2 i am getting ill go for it but for now ill stick with my $50 2.2l

If you like the power of the 2.4 you wil be sorry if you swap over the 2.2. Just seems like a lot of work to put in a turd of a motor. Even if it were free I wouldnt do it.

Power of a 2.4? its a 4banger ahaha i gotta 68 Torino with a v8 for power. I am not wasting big time money on something i might not even keep a year i am using to get back and forth from school not take to the drag strip or something.

u can do this but then u cant drive your car... well at least u cant in canada its illegal to swap a motor older then the car in
in the u.s. too.... but they'd have to crawl under the car with a mirror to look at the vin plate on the motor, then decipher that number to make out what year it is. i've never seen an inspection station that anal.
JBO Stickers! Get yours today!
Well if they find out not that big of a deal to me i will just get another motor plan and simple.

I am going to clear this up my car had a 2.4l 5 speed the gearbox needed to be rebuilt then the guy i got it off before i payed him he sold the engine to his brother. The car i am getting the motor and gear box from has EVERYTHING!! there and it is a 2.2l 5 speed which is out of a 1995 cavalier coupe (z22 someone said they don't exist but thats what the stickers says on the side of her.) I don't care about the lack of power of it Its cheap with everything there. You guys say keep my money and put it to a 2.4 which is kinda hard to get money for a motor for your car with no job because i can't get a ride most days so this is a cheap quick way for me to get the car on the road so i can get back and forth from work and school. Anyways Thanks for all your help guys really apretcate (sp) it and anything that is really helpful to me please tell me like exactly what i need to put it in and if i need to change motor mounts and stuff like that.

1) Old V8's are junk, and that's why they don't make them any more. It's been proven time and time again that you can go fast with less than 2L of engine.
But anyways. You CAN do the swap, however you will need to swap everything. Engine, Transmission (possibly axles too), computer, and wire harness. Not real sure if you'll run into a compatibility issue with the rest of the stuff in the car not working with a 95 ECM or not. Secondly it's also something you need to look at if you have emissions testing. It is in most places ILLEGAL to swap to an OLDER engine. Swapping to a newer engine is ok because of the increased emissions standards and blah blah blah. Also, if you remove the OBD-II from your car (which you would do by going to a 95 ECM) and they try to hook up the tool to your computer port for the emissions test, that will be an automatic FAIL.
All in all, YES you can swap the stuff over, but you're doing a lot of work and it would be easiest just to pop in another 2.4 and call it a day. But mostly you need to look into your local law situation regarding emissions and such.
