Couple quik 3400 questions

Ok guys, here is what I need to know.
When I did RSF's swap, his car was a 98 and we kept all the original body wiring and mated an 03 Alero wiring harness and pcm to that.
I am currently doing a swap into a 97, but I converted the complete car to 00+. I already replaced the body harness and gas tank with pump. I am heading to the yard on Tuesday to look for a 3400 harness.
Here is my question... Do I need a 2000+ donor car harness, and ifso, do I need that BCM or do I keep the J body BCM to run the gauges? I know that if you convert to 2000+, the gauges work and all you have to do is flash the pcm to an 03 Malibu and make the fuel gauge work.
Please let me know what you know so I can get the correct harness and pcm and possibly BCM.
Thanx in advance.

stick with the cav bcm to play it safe. the mileage is in the 00+ bcm so dont be suprised when you hook up your cluster and see the incorrect mileage.
You might be able to wire in an 00+ bcm but I doubt it if the other older systems will acnowledge the class 2 serial. You more than likely will have to switch out your abs and air bag modules also.
Best bet is to get the entire 00+ body wiring with the abs module , airbag module, BCM and cluster and you should be set. which means the entire body wiring.

I have already rewired the whole car as 2000+ I gutted an 01 SFGT and stole EVERYTHING! BCM, body, dash and engine wiring, ABS module, air bags exploded, but I dont care, air bags arent being used on this car. So what you are saying is that I stiick with the J-body BCM and it will comunicate with the 3400 PCM?
So what year 3400 engine wiring and PCM should I be looking for? 2000+?

try to stay around 2000 2003 area, When I did my swap i was reading about changes that were underway to switch from class 2 serial to something that is supposed to be better. You may not have to worry about that though on a 3400, Although It wasnt supposed to be a drastic change , but a gradual one through the years. I would have to say that the 3500's are using it though.
Thats a whole other topic . Just stick between 00 and 03, Its always best to keep the same year as your engine, no sense causing more issues if you dont have to.
Watch out for smog pump engines and harnesses that have tubes on the manifolds and a smog pump on the subframe.
And from what I have heard , there are some van motors that have some undesirable things fro car swaping.

isn't 03 a different engine at least it was grouped different on car-part.com. also what your trying to say is get an engine year same as veh year. just trying to make it a little clearer.

Yes I would keep with in your cav wiring year, for example if you are running an 02 cav wiring, try to stay with an 02 engine pcm and wiring. I say that because If you try to keep the technology with in the same year your going to be less likely to run into serial data issues. Im no expert on serial data by far, As a precaution I would just automatically stay with in the same year. Why make it harder if you dont have to.
Also If you want to get parts down the road you dont have to wonder what year did that part come from?
They started to change some things on the 3400's around 02-03, I know that they changed the rocker arm bolts for some reason. I had an 02 in at work that popped the threads right out of the head, 56K on it. Never did find out why it happened.
As for why the 03 comes up as a different engine, I couldnt tell you, if its a 3400 it will bolt up, just get the 03 harness if you have any question about its difference.
I can tell you that the 03 flash will work in an 01 gam pcm and harness, so there must not be a drastic diff in the harness or engine.
