Starter Swap Question
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:01 PM
My starter works fine, it just sounds awful. Imagine a cat with metal lungs hacking up a hairball, that's what it sounds like. I have heard of B-Body (Impala/Caprice) guys swapping over to Corvette starters because they are lighter and very high torque starters. Autozone's website says there's a 4lb difference between the 2.2 OHV starter and the Ecotec one. Would it be possible to swap over to an Ecotec starter, why or why not? Would it be worth it to pick one up from a junkyard? Thoughts are welcome...

nope, different body.

good luck finding one for a 2.2 or 2.4 that will bolt in the same. and if it's screeching, the brushes inside the casing on the drive of the starter is shot. you could get it rebuilt for cheaper.

You have a 2.2L right?

In 01 the 2200 used a smaller, gear reduction starter. I THINK it will work, but i'm not 100% certain on it.

I put a starter from an '87 Celebrity on my '02 2200... fit fine, as did the starter from a '95 2200... so yeah, an '02 Cavi uses a denso style starter and it will fit fine. Far as I know, anything older then the 2200 in a fwd platform has a starter that will fit.

I'd rather drive an A than push a J...
