Ok I searched and didnt find much, but if you happen to find something please link me to it thanks...
Anyways heres my problem...
When idling my car will heat up... slowly but will eventually get to around the middle of the temp guage... but when im driving itll drop down to close to the C if not bellow it...
Ive thought and think maybe the thermostat is stuck open... but then wouldnt it not heat up at all?...
If you guys have any idea please try and help me out...
Thanks for reading...
Oh and its a 97 Sunfire 2.2 5 speed... if it matter...
thermostat and check to see if your fan is running full on. when it doesn't need to be.
ok thanks guys... ill try the thermostat and check the fan and get back to you....
Yea sounds like the thermostat to me
I had this exact same problem. I had a new thermostat, and it turned out the spring was too weak in it simply because it was cheaply made. what happened was, it would heat up just idling, yeah, but driving, RPM would go up, making more pressure in the cooling system and force the spring open. Now I only buy NAPA thermostats. they have a heavier spring.

Thermostat is stuck open. Actually that's what it's SUPPOSED to do when it fails is stick open so you don't overheat the engine. Easy fix.
so i changed the thermostat and its fine now... thanks for your input guys...
thought it was the thermostat from the beginning... but it was good to get other opinions...
YAY! IVE GOT HEAT AGAIN!!!!!!!!
How hard was it to swap out? I read in another thread that it isnt easy. I have this issue, sometimes heat, sometimes no heat! haha.
i donno if the thermostat is your problem... but it was easy... took me about 5 mins to change out... its right at the front by the rad...
as long as youve got the same engine as me it shouldnt be hard... from what i remember the other 2.2's arent that hard either...
Thermo is easy..3 bolts, 5 minute job.
Super duper easy.

^^^ easy on a 2.2 ohv... no so easy on a 2.4 TC

yup on the 2.2 it was only 2 bolts...
thanks feels good to have heat... now my fingers wont get numb while im driving... lol
2 or 3 bolts is depending. most of them are 2 bolts in the housing behind the water pump. some are in the old location to the right of the cylinder head, 3 bolts
Mines 3, still, super easy.
Glad you're warm!
