Ecotec swap help ( I'm having a wiring nightmare pre-00)
Monday, February 04, 2008 8:56 PM
So i have right now 3 interior wiring harness. None of which are exactly what i need.

1- 2004 Sunfire Coupe manual trans with ABS and without cruise + fogs - Missing SDM module connector

1- 2003 Cavalier LS Sport Coupe manual trans with ABS and With Cruise + fogs - Missing SDM module connector

1- 2003 4 door Cavalier Automatic without ABS and Without cruise + No fogs & Complete 100%
- Cavalier headlight wiring harness without fogs.
- Body wiring harness from this car
- 4 door BCM from same car
- Gauge cluster from same car

I have everything to do an automatic Ecotec swap plug and play no problem. But I took this one step further and decided to go 5 speed since i've been wanting one since i learned to drive stick at 16 but didn't know cavaliers came in 5 speeds back when i was looking for my first car and this one was a steal my parents thought.

The 2004 sunfire harness is the most complete manual one i have and closest to what i need minus the ABS portion but to me all the connectors look soo different than my cav ones or maybe its just me. I realize the headlight harness is going to be different for one but i have 2 cavalier ones and i think i can cut connectors off and wiring them in the same.

Here is the harness...

1) Fuse Box
2) Trunk Release
Left ? mark - Possibly body wiring harness to dome lights...
Right ? mark - I think is the dimmer switch and fog light connectors

1) Connector for engine wire harness
2) Brake fluid Res.
3) Wiper Motor
4) Headlight harness connector.

Red - Male connectors for BCM
Green - Connectors for body wiring harness.

Green- Clutch start saftey switch

Green - To the multifunction switches.
Red - Key cylinder ( for some reason the one i have now only has 2 wires, this is 3)
Blue- I don't remember for sure

yellow connector is for passenger side air bag.
Green circle - Possibly for blower motor?

Red - OBD II Computer port
Green - Second Brake light switch connector possibly?
Blue - Yea thats not labeled right ( should be second brake light switch connector)
Pink - I'm going to guess relay for fog lights. It says Hella on the top portion.

The bottom Cut multi-colored wires i just figured out go to the SDM module but that other connector in there which is spliced into i have no idea what that goes to.

I guess life cannot be easy. So here are my questions..

1) Help me fill in the missing blanks above on the photos
2) Do i need a new key cylinder for a manual trans?
3) What causes a fault to be thrown about the ABS system to be incomplete? If my engine harness doesn't have it should i be ok not throwing a light?
4) Does anyone have the headlight wiring diagrams for 03-05 sunfires and cavaliers?

Thanks for anyones help that can contribute.

Well i can name a few of them....

First pic> black plug is the dome light harness
>white plug is the dimmer i believe
>hella marked is not for fog lights i believe its headlights relay. Reason i say this is my 99 had it and had no fog lights

Cut wires im not sure.....Ill have to look tommorow maybe a pic of where they are in the harness......the offer is there though i have a mostly intact harness for the interior..free except shipping..

Phill- It just came to me what those connectors are in the last pic. Its the power wire to the cig/ acc. power source on the side of the center console, because the other multi-colored wires are for the Air bag control module i know that for sure. I was looking at pics and it finally came to me when i remembered what else was down along that route of how the air bag control module wires are ran.

joey - Ya know why not go the biggest ya can go, that you can afford right bro? I got pretty much everything i needed to do the swap for just my solid TTR auto mount and my auto trans for the ecotec.

All those goodies came back from jersey with me.

Jarett - You've helped me out tremendously so far bro. I still greatly appreciate that.

I think that answers all the connector questions i have. Only one i didn't have a pic labeled for was the cluster connector but its in one of the pics.

DOn't worry about ABS. Since you do not have the ABS computer and sensors it will not know it does not have ABS.

Well the only thing which makes me doubt that is Jarrett above has ABS on his car but his engine wiring harness for his eco doesn't have ABS on it. So he's getting the ABS light thrown on his gauge cluster. So there is something causing it to go off. My body harness doesn't have the wiring for it but the dash will. I guess we'll soon find out when i eventually get this car back together.

I can name all the connectors

1st pic
Left black plug is rear view mirror/dome light
Right white plug is dimmer dial
Right black plug (might be two there) is fog lights, second if there is the ETS off switch on an auto Sunfire (only)

5th pic
Blue is the wiper switch
Red is the Passlock switch. IDK why yours has 2 wires not three. Could be the year. You might need to swap the cylinder.

6th pic
Yellow is Air bag, as you know
Other is the heater controls. There's another harness it plugs into, which goes to the control panel

7th pic
Pink circle is the flasher relay (it's electronic)
Green & blue are the brake light switches. Green is the brake light switch, orange is power and feeds white to the turn signal switch. Blue is the cruise control brake signal input.

Last pic
Cig outlet, looks like someone added wires to tap some power. Those aren't stock wires.

I also have lots of extra cut harnesses laying around, extra connectors and so on if you need anything specific.

Your getrag is bringing a hole into my pocket. I had to search out an engine wiring harness for the motor since yours had abs, cruise and like 5 connectors missing $250 later found one in PA, Still need a Spec 3+ clutch, new master cylinder and hydrolic lines since yours didn't exist, a rear tranny mount since jeffy lost it ( bastard) short throw shifter, and dear lord the list continues.

But yea, PA isn't really that far and neither are you Jersey guys.
