Get a 3400 or an 00+ 3100. If you're feeling real adventurous, you can try for a non-VVT 3500. You will just need to get the crank trigger from 60degreeV6.com because the 3500 uses a different signal than the 3100/3400. I would recommend the 16231853 ECM from a 96+ GA, Malibu, Cutlass, etc., because they are sealed and made to be installed under the hood or in the fender. I would try for a 96 GA just to keep it as close to your car as possible, and have the least amount of potential electronic issues. The other ECM used in the newer GA's, and a few other cars, have to be installed under the dash because they are not weatherproof. The plastic bracket for the GA should fit in the factory location of the J-body inside the passenger fender. One thing to pay attention to is the injectors, If you get an 01+ motor, it will most likely have the low impedance injectors. If that's the case, you have a couple of options: get the injectors and harness from an 00+ and earlier motor, get the ECM from the donor motor.

If you have the option to swap to the v6, take it, you wont be sorry.

Read the sticky. It covers pretty much everything except all the cross references for the various wiring possibilities. Really it's just a matter of getting the diagrams from the donor harness and your car, and figuring out which wires you can leave alone, and which ones you need to splice. Take your time and plan it out and you will be fine.

As far as power, you're already 70hp over your 2.2 by doing a 3400, 65hp more by doing a late 3100, not to mention the torque difference which is even larger. To get that kind of power out of a 2.2, you're going to spend more money. Now think about the fact that the V6 can easily be pushed over 200hp with simple mods such as p/p and a cam.
