Official Progress Thread 3400 Swap
Wednesday, January 09, 2008 10:52 PM
So today I got to cut the old motor mount out for the new one to go in. Started breaking down the motor and found a cracked pushrod. These motors are notorious for the lower intake leaking so im replacing all the gaskets on the top end. Porting the heads and getting them decked for a little higher compression. The wiring is really starting to worry me. Thankfully my teacher worked for GM and has worked on these motors to no end and was a driveability tech which means hes good with wiring.

On to the pics

I have to admit i kinda have been feeling upset because the 2.2 engine has come such a long way over the years. I feel like im letting the car down or something as gay as that sounds lol. But oh well ill have another cavy soon to put that motor back into it!!!!!!

If you want some higher compression, don't get the heads decked. Instead use pistons from the iron head 3.4L (Camaro/Firebird) and put them in.
Then you'll get something like 12:1.

Just a suggestion, if you've got the time, a little extra money, and facilities (which looks obvious) to do the work.

Looking good man. I'm totally jealous of the facilities you've got to work with.

If there's an autobody shop at your school, you should take some parts (valve covers, intake manifold, etc) down to them and have them painted all perdy while you're working on the engine.

Well considering i have 9 hours a day for 3 months to work on this project it should be done soon im guessing like a month if that... Im porting the heads this week which takes a while and i might have to order new exhaust valves becuase there pretty pitted up... But the motor should be back together by the end of next week and should be actually in the car the next if not next week sometime.

That is a very nice looking 2.2 you have there. What header do you have on it? Looks very clean. Good luck with the 3400 swap!!

Its just a pacesetter header that i forked out the money and got ceramic coated lol Thanks!

So today got the heads off and found out that i most likly will not be able to re-use the exhaust valves. There pretty pitted up and whatnot. Does anyone sell stainless valves for this motor??? Other than that porting starts tomorrow! I flow benched the heads and man do the heads on these motors SUCK!!! LOL im really good at porting heads so im going to see if I cant improve a little on them. The motor still had the original spark plugs in it and wires hahaha 88,000 miles.

Pics

ya this is me hahaha

Had to do a little more cleaning on the heads so to get them perfectly dry...........

A good cook at 300 will do good haha

Check out 60degreeV6.com. Plenty of stuff for the 3400's. Some nice cams there too. There's a spec sheet you can download with all the cams and specs, and what power ranges they'll give, etc. Since you're doing all this work, might as well do it up right.

IIRC it's 330 for a cam Stage I through IV. Boost or N/A cams. But then you need the custom length pushrods... which are 135.

Go ahead and do LS6 valve springs too since you have them off. You wont regret it.

Last I checked they were $300 for any cam. He had something like 30-40 different grinds available. Not all of them needed custom pushrods. I think the sheet tells which ones do. But he said he had cracked ones anyway, so not really an added expense.

Not the best choice on upper engine mount.
You need 2 mount points on the transmission in order to run A/C , and a stiff lower dogbone also. And after all that the engine will still hit the a/c dryer with the car in reverse. Been there.
Look in the v6 progress thread, there are several pages about this mount.

Im not too worried about it. I have the "solid" dogbone anyway. And now since you said that ill just fab up the mounts for the rad support. B1tch isnt going anwhere. I have Trans Urethane mounts anway too.

Yeah, but if he's running the manual transmission then he'll have 2 mounts on the tranny.

I would suggest the poly bushings for the trans mounts. Not expensive, and a good time to put them in since the tranny is out of the car.

Control arm bushings too. Unless you like tons of wheel hop that is.

Already have them. Been on there for about a year.

Ya, I just looked at your registry and noticed you had the trans bushings, but what about the control arms, I dont remember seeing them there.
