hello i recently tried to hook up a aftermarket tach to my 96 cavalier 2.2L with coilpacks. i have an autogage with shift light attached and i hooked up a tach ataptor from autometer. the stock number is 9117 and i hooked both posative wires to the pink wire off my coil module. i get power but my tach reads nothing and i got everything grounded right. does any one have any suggestions before i kick a hole in the damn thing!! plz and thx
the tach and adaptor should each have 4 wires.
tach:
red - keyed power
black - ground
green (most times) - illumination
gray - signal
cut the main power supply to the coils.
adapter:
red/white: tap into car side of cut wire
red (may be pink) - ignition module side of cut wire
black - ground
gray - to tach signal wire
im pretty sure thats the colours, but its been a while since i hooked mine up. mine works flawlessly.

the tach i got has a red, green, black, and white wire and the tach adaptor has a red,red/green,black,gray wire. and for some reason i cant get a signal from the adaptor to go on my tach.
what brand is the adapter?
on mine, the red goes on the harness side of the power wire, red/green to the coil side, black is ground, grey is signal (MSD 8913)

i got an autometer tach adaptor. i have the adaptor hooked up right but im not reciving a signal to my tach. is my tach broken? i have a proform tach with shift light.
i got that one i think its adjustable with shift light attached. from proform. i had the wires all hooked up and i wasnt reciving a signal whats so ever. so any clues?
Switch up the two positive wires
That's all it took for mine to work properly.
ya i tried that and it didnt work my car wouldnt start after that lol.. so im outta ideas and no one at my work knows whats wrong with the piece of crap.
That means that either the adapter or tach is hosed.
Get a DMM and put the positive side to the signal wire, neg to ground, set to volts and rev the engine. That should cause a fluctuation in the signal wire (I hope)
