Screech when you turn?
Wednesday, November 28, 2007 9:16 PM
Even tried turning your car on while it's running?

That's the noise my 03 Cav makes when you turn it on. If you let it turn for even more than a second-SCREECH!

It's never done this until this week (doesn't do it every time), and it not like I it sit in that position?

Anybody had an issue like this?

It's quite strange......

Nope, nice and full.

It's more a starter issue-when you turn the key (I see I failed to mention that above)

It's going to drive me nuts...and the coupe doesn't do it at all.....

Oh i thought u were talking about then you turn the wheel, not when starting the car. You more than likely need a new starter. Pull the starter and inspect the drive gear for damage and also inspect the ring gear on the flewplate for damage also.

As a side note (probably unrelated), and I'm not sure if it's just me, but does anybody else have the problem that when your car is stopped and you turn the wheel all the way one way or the other, the revs drop a little bit like you're not giving it enough gas taking off?

^^^i think thats the power stearing taking power away from everything else

could be wrong, but i notice that as well in my car

Yea thats the powersteering. Your hitting the steering stop and your pump still tries to push fluid to help turn the wheels, bogging the pump down. Its VERY, VERY, VERY common.

yes thats true. also tap on your brakes alot your rpm will go up as wll very normal

if I read correctly the car is screeching like when you try to start an already started car, only its doing this on the first go round. if thats correct then get your starter tested ant a local shop or two. it sounds like the starter solenoid might be going.

So, this was the right answer, surely?

We played with the starter....checked the solenoid...cleaned everything up...nothing.

It first started to get cold-it starting getting weird like that.

After cleaning and checking everything-it's stopped doing it. Hasn't done it in over a week.

Strange, huh?

Wonder if I should keep an eye on that solenoid......

So did you have to lube the planetary gears, as in the link?

That seemed to have cured the problem for most people in the link-I don't think the problem is the solenoid, it's more the lack of lubricant on those planetary gears.

If you read some of the posters, they seem to dump a load of grease in there, with surprisingly good results!

Ok i was going to flame ya till i read the link. With all the starters i have rebuilt i have never seen one with planety gears. Now i wanna rebuild my starter for my ECOTEC just to see if it has the gears or not. I wanna say no, but i dont know for sure. But back on topic, i would keep on eye on the solenoid and it could have been a bad connection.

Planetary gears are found in an automatic transmission Along with a sun gear. No, I'm not kidding either. I haven't found a moon gear yet tho

The starter gear and the flywheel are all that you should find involving the starter motor.

I have definetly seen planetary gears(gear reduction) in starters, mainly high torque mini starters for race applications. i would not be suprised if the echo's use them since that starter resembles a mini starter.
Here is a mini for race app, looks like a newer cav one doesnt it.

Any way , it sounds like the solonoid is sticking to me.

Nope, I didn't have to use the lube, just cleaned it up.

Though I do think I might do that.....

I did catch it doing it once yesterday, but it was really damp outside...so I'm going to wait to see if it does it again....

After reading thishttp://phoenix.craigslist.org/pts/505515969.html and

AND because [ion]C2 had it happen twicequote=[ion] C2]haha i see it happen all the time. happened to me twice, friends i've witnessed more than once

There are planetary gears in the newer permanent magnet starter motors.--I looked at them in ion's link.

I just thought that the MODERN cars, i.e. anything later than '93--had these new fangled gadgets, they seem to be lighter and produce more torque

Now that I read that link... I've never actually opened that side of the motor to know if ours use that or not... I didn't think that side of the motor was serviceable.
