I have a 98 sunfire gt and the motor and transmission is gone. I was wondering what kind of motor and transmission can i get with out to much screwing around with it. the old motor was a 2.4 and a standard. i was wondering if it mattered on the year or what kind of car (sunfire or cavy ,etc) i was going to go towards a 2.2 automatic because it would be more easier for me to find.

If you don't want to do much screwing around, stick with a 5-speed. You'd have more work to switch tranny types than anything. As far as cavalier or sunfire, it doesn't matter. Just get something 96 or newer so it will be OBD II. If you get a different engine, make sure you get the entire harness and the ECM with it. I'm sure you can find a 2.4 and 5-speed at a yard somewhere. Check online at some of the national salvage yards, like www.lkqcorp.com, or www.greenleafauto.com.

www.car-part.com is your friend when searching, it will search all the national salvage yards for you.

what the rest said, stick with the 5 speed tranny. Also, If I were in your shoes, I'd stick with the 2.4 as well. To swap a 2.2 in there isn't going to be that easy. All the mounts are different, as well as the trannies. If your not afraid to spend a few dollars, I'd suggest hunting down a used tranny with low miles, and rebuild the 2.4

well i was going to buy a parts car that i could take the motor and tranny out . Also it's kind of hard to drop a few dollars when your a high school student with no job.there is no motor in it anymore so i can't rebuild it the motor was sold before i bought the car. I also may be able to get a 98 cavy 5 speed that i could take the motor and tranny out. having said that would i need to change over the mounts and all the other stuff?

you would only need to change the mounts if you get a different engine/tranny combination and if you change that combination your looking quite a bit of work to change wiring harnesses and ecu's.
for the whole situation it will be cheaper and easier to put a 2.4 with a 5 speed back in the car.

You won't have to change the mounts if you stick with similar years. The 5 speed tranny is the same between the 2.2 and 2.4, but the bellhousing is different. Mounts are the same. The engine mount on the frame rail is the same as well. As far as the wiring, get the harness out of the donor car, and it will plug in. That would be a pretty straight forward swap, especially if you had the donor car right there the whole time.
