My 6 month old wal mart special just gave up the ghost, should i spring the extra cash for an optima? this car went through to wally mart specials in six months, i have checked everything and the has no issues i can find, i put in a new alernator, starter, and new battery ground cables, i havnt done the postive cable but it tests goos with the multimeter. I just cant figure why this thing is killing batteries other than the fact i have never had much luck with walmart batteries.
Have you ever checked to see how much draw is on the battery while the car is off? If there's something electrically wrong with the car, you're going to have the same problem with the Optima, it's just gonna take a lot longer (considering you shoot for the 150 dollar yellow top deep cycle) to drain the battery.
Both my cars have wal-mart batteries. The cavalier has a 1 year battery that's now been in there for 2 years. The GTP has their Everstart Gold series or whatever that never seems to make it to a year. It's got something draining the battery or something. I have a good suspicion of what it is/was.
yep i have checked and rechecked everything, i went and got a new battery, the sides of the walmart battery were buldgeing out. i would charge it with the battery charger till the thing showed full charge, and first crank on the engine it would dump almost its whole charge.
the battery was in it when i bought the car but only a month old , maybe the last moron added tap water to it, that will kill a battery quick. he said it was the second one in two months so somthing was fishy.
ahhhh the dreaded NEVERstart battery right?
funny, so far the new store brand o riley battery is holding up pretty good, i will know for sure after a few more days,
the walmart shows the same voltage, but doesnt have the amps to do anything.
Bulging out sides..... yeah, that's not good.
Thing I like about the auto parts store batteries is that they can keep your info on their computer, so if you lose your reciept they can just look it up.
Are you running subs or a big system? If you are, go with a BatCap...they're the BEST investment you can make if you're going to put in a system or have one now.
They're hands down way, way better than an Optima.
The World's Record Holder in SPL uses them exclusively. These things aren't like a regular battery...first off, they're made from totally different materials and are acutally big-ass capacitors, which means you don't have to buy one of those, once you have a BatCap in your car. These are totally new in design and concept, made by a real engineer who knew there had to be a better way to power a car's electrical system.
They're environmentally friendly as opposed to a regular battery that requires special disposal. They don't blow up nor is there any hazard of that happening.
They put out WAY more power than an Optima of any kind and like I said, they have a recharge rate that's insane...with one of these you don't need a high-output alternator (for you SPL guys) and just having one takes a huge load off your electrical system, prolonging the life of your alternator and everything else in your electrical system.
I have had one going on 5 years now and it's still kicking ass, with no problems whatsoever.
well the new battery sat 24 hours with everything set as normal , it lost no power and fired the car right up. somthing was definately a bad battery, like i said before maybe it wasnt the brand as much as what the previous owner may have done to it.
i have the optima yellow top and love it. also have a 1200 watt mephis sound system so i n eed it. but i can keep my subs on with the car off for about an hour with no problems. never did it long er than that. but the batter is over 6 months old as well. its perfect. brother has 3 red tops on his one truck, and friend has 1 red top on his VR6. absolietely no problems and we al love them. worth the extra money
yellow is for like extra electronics, red is starting, blue is marine. so i would suggest red for anything, but plan on having subs or anytihng, or if you already do jsut got for the yellow. also i heard the battery was a gel, not an acid. and they last double the life of normal battery around like 6-8 years.
I have an Everstart battery in my car.... It's been in there ever since I bought it.... I have almost a 2,000 watt stereo, and live where it gets cold enough to freeze batteries in the winter.... and I've never had to replace my battery in my car yet..... I was just thinking about how odd that was yesterday.
well its been over a week and the new battery has had no issues at all, the walmart battery had a sticker on it manufactured april 2007 and wouldnt hold a charge for nothing.

Well, in that case you want to see if it holds voltage with not being hooked up for 24 hours. I went over this with mine several times and found a wire shorting to the body of the car. Which made a draw that could completely kill the battery. A new battery worked ok because it hadn't been deep discharged yet.
And if it's unhooked and loses power you need to look at the cells. You have 6 cells that are 2 volts each. If your caps come off (most everstarts do) check the water level. You should have the water in it be just a bit over the plates. If the cell runs dry and you try to pull power from it, it'll fry the battery.
If your battery has caps on it, you need to check the water level periodically.
it was a six month old battery, so i kept checking everything on the car thinking there must be an electrical draw, finally went and got a new batter at oriely auto no issues since
go to sears and get a gold series or platinum battery. if it goes bad that quick you can take advantage of the warranty and get a new battery for free. i work at sears and i see people do it all the time
