Hey guys,
I am thinking about buying a Vert. I saw there is a Z24 model and a LS model. What motor does the LS model have?? Is it the 2.4L also??
OK?? Anyone know for sure
as per the wonderful john lenko

So.. here goes.. Convertible production #'s....
1995
901 Cavaliers
750 Sunfires
1,651 total convertibles
1996
7,277 Cavaliers
5,676 Sunfires
12,953 total convertibles
1997
9,228 Cavaliers
7,935 Sunfires
17,163 total convertibles
1998
7,093 Cavaliers
6,766 Sunfires
13,859 total convertibles
1999
7,627 Cavaliers
5,490 Sunfires
13,117 total convertibles
2000
4,761 Cavaliers
3,559 Sunfires
8,360 total convertibles
36,887 Cavalier 3rd gen convertibles
30,216 Sunfire convertibles
67,103 GRAND TOTAL 3rd gen convertibles
I think it was 98 when the LS convertible became the Z24 convertible. I'd assume the same for the SE becoming GT. So, all 98+ convertibles were the 2.4L. I don't know how many of the 95-97 were 2.2L, or 2.4L, or if there were any 2.3L convertibles from the factory. The numbers I have from GM do not indicate those breakdowns.
the only thing to note is that, i believe, 99 was the start of GTs verts and not 98, as my 98 drop top fire was listed as an SE on the title.
and john does not mention it specifically, but the 2.4 was an option in all LS and SE convertible models. he just couldnt get a breakdown of engine per model/trim
Ok cool. Thanks for the info guys. I guess I will just have to call and ask pre-99 models. I'm trying to get a 2000 right now, but we will see how that turns out.
I just bought a 98 Sunfire convert...it's an SE with a 2.4.

i agree, i saw a red 98ish z24 convertable forsale near me. i was debating on making an offer, but i dont think the used car dealership would have gone for letting me swap my 16" rims for the 15" rims so i could put the 16's on the convertable.
also...

ive seen one or two 95 verts with the 2.3...so they do exist, but just in very small numbers.
and yeah....cheap rip on the rims. they were ugly as hell for the cavs and just stock gt rims for the fires (and i always thought the fires got ripped on rims too. they were supposed to be the "sportier" of the two cars.....)
NO SIG FOR YOU!
The verts defintely got the short end of the stick when in came to rims.
The rims they used on the sunfire GT verts were used on the toyota cavalier too. My 98 se coupe came with the same wheels. You would think the verts would have a lot cooler wheel.
yep all toyo cavs used 15" 95-99 gt rims. never understood why, though...

I had steelies...so I swapped on the Z24 rims I saved from my Bird...
So....Anyone selling a vert for a decent price???
i just sold my fire drop top. you missed out on it. other than that check out the north regional forum. chris fontana was sellin one that needed a little TLC
NO SIG FOR YOU!
What are you looking to spend???
I have a 98 z vert
ok...tons of bad info here
MOST VERTS were 2.4/2.3 very few had the 2.2/2200
Usually, they were 2.4 autos with full options. 99-2000 are ALL GT's and Z24's
5 spd verts were all special ordered and are the rarest. I got one I'd consider selling
They all have power tops, and glass rear windows. The rear glass is the weakpoint, usually the trim starts coming loose, and you're talkin 400 or so to fix it. You got a vert question, odds are I know the answer.
I just sold my 1998 Z24 vert 5 speed in July. I miss it.....

you still got two verts? got any pics of either?

I've seen more 2.2L 'verts in the early years than I have 2.4L's... plus most of them are 5 speed around here... but the 2000's, most were auto except for about 5 I know of, which were all special ordered. Must have been a 2000 thing... and I have seen a couple of 2.3L 95 'verts, but again... most 95's I've seen had the 2.2L.
Man, this thread makes me miss my '99 Sunfire vert. But there were so many problems with it (top, back window, rubber trim...) and I just had no drive to keep it. Maybe if I had picked up a 5-speed I would have kept it but I ended up trading it in for an '07 Cobalt ls with a stick. Made me sad when I only got $1500 for it.
