ok.. so for the longest time i've been collecting info on a possible v6 swap ( LOL ) and due to this car being my daily driver i've decided against it for several reasons.
most importantly, the fact that i cannot go without a drivable car for a lengthy amount of time due to some electrical problem, or troubleshooting wireing etc.
i still believe the 3400 swap to be the best bang for ur buck swap and would highly suggest it to anyone with the proper accomodations ( in respect to my own personal research )
Now the fun stuff...
I've fallen for my 96 2.2 OHV
i like the idea of adding/modifying parts on the car as funds open up and i plan on making this bastard Engine GO like stink!
i already got a short ram intake .. soo thats like what 20whp ?
nah nah Just jokes
i'll try and briefly detail my planned build, and i would greatly apprieciate all suggestions. i understand that the OHV has a rather restrictive head so increasing flow will be a major goal
i've started to collect parts not specific to the engine build but to the cars performance in general such as:
Upper and lower RK sport engine mounts (ordered)
Trans Mounts (ordered)
eibach pro kit (have)
strut tower bar (front and back)
Drive train: (this winter)
Stage 3 clutch (brand?)
Fidanza lightweight flywheel
underdrive crank pulley (brand) + alternator pulley
Head: (this winter)
I've been looking into the patriot head for the OHV 2.2l which is port and polished and 3 angle valve job'ed etc with or without OEM valvetrain (x-mas LOL)

Camshaft
http://www.jbodyperformance.com/new/PartDetails.php?partId=297&catId=297&catName=JP0297 I think and stage 2 cam is a surefire way to get a decent hp boost out of this engine but with a new cam would i need more modification to the valve train? your input is appreciated here.
Jbody performance suggests "purchasing high-rev lifters or custom pushrods" with a new cam ?
http://www.jbodyperformance.com/new/PartDetails.php?partId=565&catId=565&catName=JP0565
i am unsure of rocker arms.. i would assume a new set of 1:6:1 rockers would increase performance over stock?
Link with a few options :
http://www.jbodyperformance.com/new/PartList.php?catId=18&catName=Valvetrain&subCatId=74&genId=3&genName=3rd%20Generation
Higher compression pistons 10:1 ?
& rods lol...
eventually i would suspect a fuel rail conversion since it is a 96 2.2 ohv and the injectors arn;t replacable??? or so i am under the impression?
exhaust:
2.5 cat back (very soon)
magnaflow high flow cat (very soon)
40 series flowmaster (sounds damn sweet) (have)
HEADER : this is prob the next mod i will be attempting but i am worried about screwing it up. Most headers i've researched have 2.25 ID collector... and since i WILL be doing 2.5 ID cat back... would this not bottleneck my flow? would it be a good idea for the gentlemen who do my custom cat back to weld up a 2.5 collector for me during the exhaust installation? ur thoughts and Brand recommendations are appriciated.
Intake and TB:
Injen Short ram (have)
Bored out stock TB http//www.jbodyperformance.com/new/PartDetails.php?partId=567&catId=567&catName=JP0567
or custom manta part TB (which seems to offer more performance?)
http://www.mantapart.com/
OP 1577G Bigger Intake Plenum/Throttle Body: Pre '98 2.0/2.2 Special cast intake plenum replacement with matching 56mm throttle body, increased airflow and performance, plus custom plenum dresses up engine compartment too
97 ecu swap and HPT !!!
thats basically my intentions...i hope the build to be complete by early spring
![](/global/images/emoticons/ag.gif)
and i very much intend to make this work, so PLEASE let me know whatcha all think ... especially all u OHV fans.
also feel free to tear into any flaws in the build as others can learn from this as well....
WOOT WALL OF TEXT !!!
Well all looks good except dont buy anything from mantapart...just search them on here...id also be leary of using 1.6 ratio rockers with a higher then stock lift cam. Now id search for a thread in the perfoamnce forum its something like 2.2 ohv performance. Its got a ton of info on builds and stuff that will help out alot.
i'll check that out in detail tomorrow thanks for the heads up
i'm very interested what a all motor ohv is capable of... i'm hoping for a 170 ish crank HP
![](/global/images/emoticons/ag.gif)
140-150 whp
jbp cams are also pointless. its a reground stock cam. you can get a custom regrind done by your favorite cam company for 1/4 the cost.
JBO Stickers! Get yours today!
i am very interested in suggestions for the header....as stated above i'm going 2.5 exhaust but all the headers i find online are 2.25 ID collector...what should i do to prevent bottlenecking? would a performance exhaust shop with mandrel bender be able to fab me a custom collector? or am i asking the wrong guys...lol maybe i should call and ask ... but in general what kinda header would u guys be thinkin? OBX the typical pacesetter
![](/global/images/emoticons/ae.gif)
?
yeah i agree about the cam... was just an example to show i was gonna look for a new cam
I'm not sure the 2.5 is really necicary for a 2.2 ohv build. . I do believe the 2.25 would be sufficient enough from what I've looked into. .
unless you're going with boost then 3" would be best. .
no edit feature? what gives?
u prob don't remeber me but i grabed a used pro kit from u in the summer... jsut painted them white and they are going on tomorrow
i'll upload some pics...i'm also putting my stock hubs back on...although they look a bit diff
if i could just find some z24 fronts/sides/bum in magenta green then the body would look sick
![](/global/images/emoticons/ae.gif)
i'll have to keep an eye on the j-yards...
and yeah i'll be going 2.5" b/c everyone who has gone 2.25 all motor ohv has regreted not going bigger...and in a serious build it should make a large difference....i'm still concerned with the header collectors all being 2.25, not sure yet what i'm gonna do.
I'll help look for a Z kit for you to man, and I knew it was you right from the start, lol
thanks jack i knew one of u gurus would pipe up eventually
Dude the price of that throttle body is a rip off... you can take it to a machine shop and get that done for cheaper... JBP is really expensive...

2.5 is all you need until you are pushing alot of power with a high cfm.. like somewhere estimated upwards of 500hp, before 3" piping would be utilized..
And watch what lifters you buy, most you'll find are only stock replacements (from what ive heard - including JBPs). Take a look on here for the lifter spring swap, theres a very informative thread (im at work and i dont have the links).
I would certainly recomend howell auto pushrods over stock. I mean its not an expensive mod and they can certainly be used on a stock build and eventually if the engine is modified you'll need them anyways. They are less likey to break under stress.
Be careful on the rocker combo you choose - may have been mainly how the valve seats were machined in my head but JBP Springs and Crane Rockers together caused major issues (this was how the head was given to me from a friend, i have since fixed it so its working great). But i believe others had problems with that as well. The only stock component in my head is the rockers. I am not that only person that went back to the stockers either. And as far as installing, so much easier, lol. Self adjusting FTW.
Keep in mind our camshaft is in the block, not the head, and its not that easy to get it. So plan on dropping the motor to be able to get at it. (looked like you had that under your "head work" list).
There is quite a few great threads on here about the 2.2s, ive read them over more than a few times, just to take it all in. Take your time and learn what you can! g/l with it though.
I've heard, might be an urban legend, that the LS1 lifters work on the 2.2 and the 2200. . I'm not sure if this is true or not, so if someone could let me, and the rest, know that would be great. .
i plan on building the motor in my garage over the winter then droping it in all shiney and cool...the stock one i'm runing right now will just be hocked or somthing...but yeah i'll be able to put a cam in with the block all apart etc...i'm doing pistons and rods remember
![](/global/images/emoticons/ae.gif)
maybe lighten the crank...
the lowering went well...we lowered the car with a pro kit... it took 3 hours
the car is still setting..i'll take some picks in the light in the morning after i put the hubs on...doing 2nd coat tonight.

The lifters themselves won't work, but it is believe the plunger spring and check ball spring could be used in the LN2 lifters. I know the LT1 plunger and check ball springs will work in the LN2 lifters.
The following was cut and pasted from another thread, I didn't feel like doing al the typing again.
Sorry, I've been busy lately and haven't had time to post in this thread yet.
Anyways, here are the links that were mentioned earlier:

I Know it's allot of reading, but it is extremely informative. You also get an inside look at how we found out what works and what doesn't.
thank you to both MadJack and RedCavilac. all those threads will help out alot.
zomg....
this is such utter BS
so i've been calling around looking for a new fender cause the left fender is dented from before i owned the car....and today a deer ran into me while i was going 70ish km/h
so my driver side fender is now @!#$... head light is busted...corner light is hanging out.... and the door isn't lining up right....soooo yeah...irony wtf LOL
soooo yeah...good times
i'll post pics eventually..... i guess this project will be on hold for a bit...but i'm not gonna abandon it... birthday and christmas coming up lol
