AC Clutch

From the sounds of it, this needs replacing. I get a weird grinding/whirring noise only when I use the AC. Anyone have any idea if this is something the typical driveway wannabe-mechanic can do? Is there an write-ups online with a how-to maybe?

change the whole compressor. its cheap insurance, as the whole compressor only costs (usually) about $75-100 more than the clutch.

Well ~$45 for clutch or ~$325 for compressor, slight price difference there (on new parts, not refurb'd).

I bought a complete compressor from a junk yard for $45, 4 years ago, and still going strong. I figured, if it goes out in 6 months it was only $45!

True. If you replace the whole compressor I am assuming you have to evacuate the old refrigerant and then install new compressor, the refill the refrigerant back into the system?

So there would be that additional charge to if this need to be done.
