while the 92 engine will fit and even run in your 96, you wont have a cam sensor signal. they changed the block in 94 to add the cam sensor spot. you can go with any 2.2 ohv from 94-97 but the 94 and possibly 95 do not have the correct notch on the camshaft. which means you would have to use a 96-97 cam in that motor. i currently have a 94 motor in my 96 cavalier with the wrong cam, it sets off the CEL but does run. i have put 20,000 + miles on the motor keep in mind you will be in limp in mode, it is bad for power, bad for fuel economy, and that CEL drives me insane. but you do have options. i would just get a 96-97 engine and be done with it.

The 92 i think also has even less power then you already have.

Ok so if i use the cam from my 96 engine and drill and tap for the cam sensor will that work?

i dont think the 92 even has a spot to drill for the cam sensor. also the newer block has a small tapped hole beside the cam sensor hole that a little bolt goes into to hold in the cam sensor in. honestly from experience i would just go with a 94-97, peferrably a 96-97 as they will be a direct replacement. limp in mode sucks!!! you only get a factory preset low performance running program, which means no power enrichment, no synchronized fuel injection, poor ignition timing, not to mention the ecu wont even look at the o2 readings to adjust fuel curves; you will be very rich most of the time. i know its more expensive sometimes to do it right but it will save you in the long run. a couple extra hundred now to get a 96-97 will save you in gas mileage later. mine dropped 5-8 mpg just from switching the motor.

Damn that sucks man Ill have to look for a 96-98 and just rebuild it then.

Ok another question i got the 92 engine REALLY cheep (read free) and was wondering if i could swap the ecu to make it work?

the 92 engine should run on the 96 ecu. that being said it will have only alternating double fire injection ( no sequential) two injectors will pulse at a time alternately with the other two. if you are set on this then i guess it is a "drop in" and plug in all the connectors except the cam sensor. you will also have to use the ignition coil assembly from the 96 as well because the 92 is a little different. i would use the oil pan from the 96 as it has the oil level sensor in it and you dont want that annoying light poppin up on your dash do ya. best of luck i hope it works out for you.

Yea but the only thing im worried about is the thing going into limp mode and how much of a performance hit would the injectors not running sequential?

in limp-in mode my car ran a 16.75 1/4 mile. thats not too bad. my car is a 5 speed and i got some things done to it but as you can see it hasnt made it slower than stock. its just not as fast as it could be.

Ok thats not bad at all! And you have the stock ecu right?

not sure what your financial situation is, but get a 97 PCM and you should be able to disable some of the DTC's using HP tuners to prevent "limp-mode"

also, I'm not sure if that is even doable

Another question does the 92 2.2 have a knock sensor?

Re: Swap question

it should as most, if not all, computer controlled fuel injected cars do. though my bet would be that it is a 1 wire and will work with your factory plug. if there isnt a knock sensor on the block i would say that there probably is a hole threaded for one somewhere on the back. if you have to just use the knock sensor off of the 96. good luck

You could probably tap a hole in the block for the cam sensor, but then, you need a cam with a reluctor wheel on it.

It would just be a lot easier financially to just get an engine for the year you need.

Well if i can tap the hole for the cam sensor i will just use the cam from my 96 engine . And nice to hear about the knock sensor!

bump ............ any progress or solid decision on the direction being taken with the engine situation?

Re: Swap question

No i got the engine in it ran......rather well drove it around everything was great.....until i saw smoke coming from under the hood found out the fuel line came loose (how it did this i have no idea) and sprayed fuel all over the engine......long story short the cav is no more it was never meant to be i guess. Im going to miss that little car. Rip little cav.

Heh..... you really have to pay attention to that on the 2.2. It's easy to lose/tear the o-ring on the fuel line..... which is probably what happened.

Just another case of my favorite saying "there's never enough time to do it right, but there's pleanty of time to do it over"
Good luck with the Acura though. (as I see what you now have in another post)

yeah, lost mine when i did my rebuild. luckily, my kit came with ALL the o-ringsi could ever need for my engine.
