Converting the 98 2.4L to a 00

Ok, so I bought a 98 Cav Z24 a while ago... been driving it as the daily driver. I came to realize the reason I hated the 95-99 Cav dash... the stupid radio being on the bottom, near the crappy 95-99 single cupholder. I swapped the centre console for a 00+ one, which is better with the two cupholders but still... the radio is too low. It needs to be on top like the Sunfires are, and the 00-05 Cavaliers... so... swap the dash right? Well, I know the cluster won't fit. And I hate the 95-99 cluster anyway...

So... I managed to get a deal on a bunch of 00 Sunfire electrical parts: PCM, BCM, radio, SDM, brake master cylinder, ABS module, etc.. I have a leftover Sunfire cluster from the red 'vert... I also have a complete 00 5-speed engine and dash wiring harness from the 'vert... so I'm going to do the swap... make the 98 into a 00, electrically..

I did the swap before on the white 'vert... went from 99 to 00. Not too bad... so I know the main issues. I have a two-wire primary O2 sensor I'll be swapping in. I'm changing out the 98 ABS module and the brake lines for the 00 ones. No big deal, done that before. I've still got to find a 99+ intake manifold, and make a plate to block off the EGR port on the head. I'm not going to swap the manifold (at least not yet). I do have 2 or 3 99+ manifolds here, but no 99+ downpipe... so that will stay for now.

I have two issues I need to work out before I do the swap...

1. Injectors. I have the 98 injectors, which are low impedence I believe. I need to find 99+ (high impedence) ones. Once upon a time, I heard that you can run one set with the other drivers, but I don't know which way. (Anyone happen to know if I can run the older injectors with the newer PCM? Or am I getting it backwards?)

2. Knock sensor. 98 is a one wire. 99+ is a two wire. I'll have to convert it, or figure out the wiring. Is it just a ground wire (the additional wire?)? If so.. can I omit it and be OK? Dunno yet.

Fun, fun, fun!

For the injectors, you have it backwards. Newer is low impedance, and you can not run a computer that wants high impedence with low impedence injectors.

For the O2, I'm not sure. I thought the newer 2.4 had a 3 wire, not 2. I've been finding out lately that there are a lot more variations of O2 sensors than I had previously thought.
If you've got a multimeter, I would just test each lead to ground and see what happens.

Newer is high impedance, older is low impedance. You can run low impedance injectors in a high impedance car, but not high impedance in a low impedance car.

I'm not too sure on the knock sensor, I'd have to look up the diagrams.

BTW, this post http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=40&i=83909&t=83909 has information about what years have what impedance.

Ok, that post contradicts what you just said:

You can use High Impedance injectors with a low impedance injector driver/ECU but not viceversa

So, I'm better off finding a set of 99+ injectors, eh?

Ok, so the knock sensor changed a bit between 98 and 99. Older single wire was self-grounded to the case, plus has an internal 100 kohms resistor. The single wire provides signal to the PCM. The newer two-wire gets it's low reference from the PCM via that second wire, and the resistor is now inside the PCM, not the sensor itself. Twisted pair wire to the sensor.

It MIGHT work to use the old sensor with the new PCM and just cap off the extra wire. I'll try and see

John I have a couple set of 00+ injectors. They might need to be cleaned, but I have them PM me if you are interested.

I have a 99+ intake manifold as well. Why make a plate to block off the EGR when you can just use a 00+ exhaust manifold gasket (which blocks the port for the EGR).

As for the knock sensor look at this post knock sensor repin
Truly since you have a 00+ wiring etc... why not drill a new whole for the 99+ knock sensor and run that and not deal with repinning. Good luck.

John how is the red car coming along?
