This is very intermittent which is what's confusing me. 2004 2.2 ecotec, 5 speed trans.
If I'm slowing to stop and I put the clutch in and move the car out of gear, the RPMs drop (say from 3000-3500) and instead of going to the usual 800-1000 range, the tach will drop completely and the car stalls.
If I'm in neutral and I just rev the car, it goes up and will drop back to 800-1000 no problem. It only seems to be if I'm rolling and I pull the car out of gear, and only when IM slowing down. If I 5-4/4-3 downshift it doesn't cause a problem, only when the RPMs drop more than they would from a 1 gear downshift.
I'm not getting an SES light either.
I just changed the plugs ~3k ago... I'm not sure if it is a sensor of some sorts or what. Any help is appreciated. Car has 36k on it.
Thanks, Dan

Havent you posted this like ten times already.
i believe I said before, that you would need a scan tool to see what exactly some of the sensors are reading, and why exactly it is stalling

No, this is the first time I have posted this. It just started happening a few days ago.

Well then i do apoligize, but other people have posted this many times and no sultion has been posted.
We know it only happens with manuals trough, no one has posted the problem saying they have an auto

mine is an auto and kinda does the same thing if im just at a dead stop but doesnt stall... rpms just drop from like 600 to about 400 and then it jumps back up...

haha. mine did this all the time. i bought a new battery, and it helped a little bit. but this happens daily for me. once i drove about 2 miles, and it stalled about 5 times on me. on major roads as well. i have a 5 spd. and when i push the clutch in, it will stall if i dont rev it. something is wrong, but i dont know what
Mine used to do that a lot. Mostly when it was raining out. It ended up being a recal/warrenty that when I took it in for something else. It was a computer reflash. Problem is that it still does it, but only like every few weeks but it doesn't cause my car like it used to. It just acts like it will and the RPMs go back up.

If you recently bought and installed an intake, check out the throttle bypass line. My RK Sport one was too long, and it got kinked up once which caused my car to choke and die while idling. Get a new tube from Autozone or shorten the one you have up, and make sure it's not kinked if that ends up being the problem.
my Eco swap is doing this too. I was thinking it was the Comp Stage II cams I put in, but it seems a lot of Eco's are having the issue.
Ron, what do you mean by throttle bypass line?

did a little searching, and it seems the '03's have a huge issue with the fuel pump going bad.
also, a few searches came up with a bad crank position sensor.

My '03 never stalled on me. Well, I stalled it, but it never stalled itself.
mine did it frequenty as well. id come to a light then it would die. maybe i was lucky to have a code thown, it was a lean mixture. not sure which was lacking, my guess was the air.. after i put in my aem cai it never happened again. it could be a large number of things, but start small and with the minor problems, dont assume the worst

Alot of Ecos have this problem. Mine does it too maybe once or twice a month, it doesnt throw a code either.
It could be: Crank possition sensor, fuel pump relay, IAC valve, there are alot of possibilities. Im waiting until mine becomes more chronic or throws a code before I worry about it.

Yea.. Sound to me like it could a few things.. I have a 98 sunbird. Which did the same thing. Here is a list of stuff to check. Seen how you did the Spark plugs.
Check the Plug wires make sure there connected tightly to the ignition mod's.
Check the fuel filter or just replace.
Check your Gound wires to the engine. Could be a dirty connection from the PCM or a Loose ground.
Check for a bad Vacuum line, it could be Open, plugged, cracked or off. A Test for is to check by starting the car and pumping the crap out of the brakes and see if it will stall.. If it doesn't look to the next part! If I does start looking to vacuum lines.
Check or Change O2 sensors.
Check the Spark Plugs and make sure they are burning right. That there not black or dirty with. This Can Help big time if you know what you are looking for. Make sure there gapped right for your engine.
Check the Fuel System, Could be bad gas, change where to get the gas, Upgrade to a Higher Octane gas. Run some engine stuff like octane boost, fuel filter cleaner, and etc.
Then if Problems are still their. You Will have to start looking to the Sensor Replacing!! And Major Electronic Problems. But If your check engine list hasn't come one. Shouldn't have to worry as much.
I know with this 1998 Sunbird was a problem with the A/C not working and If that is a problem. Which Is a Common problem with the PCM module.. Once I replaced and had it reprogrammed problem is fixed!! What an Expensive problem tho to diagnotis.
The Good thing I found a guy on ebay, Selling a Brand NEW one!
So How many KM or Miles are on it? That should give you some extra Idea's to check and see if you can find out where to look or where not to look?
And I have found out with my New 2007 Chev Aveo. at 100,000 km(60,000 miles) they Recommend change the Timing Belt! Which is insane!! But the deals have to make there money some how!!
my 03 ECO does it sometimes....in fact it did it on friday
Mine used to do it till i tryed cleaning my throttle body with some carb cleaner on a rag and it has not done it in about 6 months.
Mine used to do it, 2003. Brought it in and had them reflash the computer, hasn't stalled since.
Was the worst whenever the defrost/air conditioning was on.
Sorry to revive a dead post, but I am having this issue also, mine stalled several times on my way to work this morning. I am suspecting the IAC needs to be cleaned,
If that doesn't work fuel filter sounds like a good idea. I will be sure to report back with my findings

There was a recall on the 03's, not too sure about the other years, for a PCM reflash due to low idle and stalling issues
my 03 did this before i had the pcm reflashed for a recall, no issues since 05 when the recall was done.

My 03 did this also back when it was new, I got the PCM re-flashed and it also hasn't done it since, I guess the PCM was thinking it was going into a stall condition... after the re-flashing it's worked the very best, that was 180,000+kms ago...
