OK, a buddy and I are going to get rid of the power steering in our cars, and instead of being stuck with a power steering rack thats not hooked up is there anyway to hook up the non-power steering rack from a SL series Saturn or the electric power steering from an ION? Or are there any J-bodies without power steering that we can swap in.

Couldn't you just pop the lines off the rack, head down to the hardware store and get brass some screw in plugs (in the plumbing section) to cap off the input/output on the rack? Solves your purpose nicely.

i dont think thats a good idea. a true maual rack would be better.
i thought the cobalt electric rack and system might be cool to install. the whole cobalt steering wheel, shaft, and rack, then you get the nice steering wheel buttons and such.

you mean connect the input and output together to make a loop? If so thats what we are planning to do but I would rather have a rack that is supposed to be for a non-power situation.

I know grand ams racks will fit with some modifications.
I would just loop back the lines, like you said.

I think he meant put a bolt in to cap the holes off. I would also think this would work as well. I agree a manual rack would be better, it will turn better than a non manual rack without power. I do not see why you would need to loop the holes together. You will not be pumping fluid through it.

I will tell you that the Saturn's manual steering rack from the SL is very slow reacting and Saturn did so, so it can be drivable with less effort at low speeds; it will be even more easier in effort with a good set of tires, like Michelin. If I remember right, their ratio is 19:1 vs on our cars 14:1-16:1(depending on trim). So unless you like turning the wheel more to make turns or in emergency maneuvers, I don't recommend Saturn's manual steering. Don't forget our cars are about 300-400lbs heavier then the Saturn and it will be a more PIA to move that steering in a parking spot.
The ONLY thing I can see advantage is if you use this system for just pure drag racing, where there are no turns.
EPS... electric power steering on GM cars is big no-no in terms of feel, they are very artificial in feel. The only advantage I can say is, it will save you a little in fuel, but that's just as long you don't turn the steering wheel, like in a long stretch of straight highway.

Why are you wanting to remove the PS?
Power racks will have a better ratio than the manual ones.
If you want it to turn easier get a power assist pump for a 01 Grand am 3.4 with power assist, work with the lines a little for fitment, and dont hook up the pwr assist valve. The ratio on the gam gt is the same as a cav rack, it is a direct bolt in but what for.
I dont know of any manual racks that are a direct bolt in on a 3rd gen, besides a 3rd gen.

Hydraulic power steering is meant to have hydraulic pressure traveling through it. If it is sealed by capping off the lines, you will trap air or hydraulic fluid inside and may not steer at all. The question is why do you want to do this? Most FWD vehicles have 60+% of the weight on front wheels..this makes the steering heavy particularly at low speeds. I am trying to install a Cobalt manual rack with EPS on the column in a 97 J car. It will take some modifications to do this. We have not figured out how or if the Cobalt column will fit. We may just try it manually to see how it feels. Does anybody know anything about the electrics to make EPS work?
