HVAC/Stereo swap?
Sunday, February 18, 2007 5:52 PM
alright guys this is my last post for the month... seriously this is my last post so i apologize for not being courteous and thanking you guys for answers to this silly set of questions ahead of time.

first. my dash is removed right now for painting and detailing... so everything under it is exposed
HVAC: my hvac lights do not work... for cosemetic reasons i would like to replace the entire hvac cluster with a new one (same year... 2000) is that just take the old one out, unplug the connections, plug the new one and put it back? i wanted to double check, im sure you guys have done this before.

Stereo: my 2000 stereo has seen better days thanks to my mother having nailpolish on the buttons... could i replace this with a 2002 cd player (mp3 compatable?) the one i really want to get is the one from a 2002 sunfire, grand am, or alero... as far as i know they all fit... but what process would be involved with the actual installation... take out the old one and plug in the new one?

thanks for the help!

hey, thanks for the response, but how do you unlock the stereos? or would that info come with it when i buy it?

if you but it from the dealer, it comes unlocked...

however... ITS NOT CHEAP

MSRP on a 2000 Z24 radio (which we all know doesnt have MP3 or XM ability) = $700+ ... luckally for me since i work at the dealership, im like a wholesale account and got the radio for $215... (and the dealership still made money on the radio) ...

a friend of mine got a price on a brand new replacement radio for her baseline 04 sunfire. (the most bottom end radio you can get), and it was about $500.

if you get it from a junkyard or from someone who put an aftermarket radio in. You will have to go to the dealer and get it unlocked. I dont know how much they charge to do that (since every dealer is different in that respect) or if they'll charge, but you will have to prove you legally own the radio and didnt steal it. you'll get a receipt from the junkyard, but you'll need a receipt from a private owner...

If you buy after market... you have to buy a module which is between 100 and 150 ... keep that in mind... w/o the module, you'll lose your door chime and your air bags can randomly deploy....

Really, randomly deploying air bags, and no door chime, that's odd, I've got an aftermarket radio, with the standard harness, and amazingly I still have my door chimes, and the air bags haven't gone off in my face. Isn't that weird, by the way I had the uplevel radio on my cavi, with MP3, the only option I didn't get on the car was XM. Keep in mind not everyone on JBO knows what they're talking about. When the eco first came out, there was a thread in the nitrous forum saying use NGK TR6 plugs, way wrong spark plug for the ecotec.

no not really.

Either he is pulling your chain or doesn't know.

The only thing you will loose is your chimes, only if you don't by the GM harness. Take a look in the Audio forum and the FAQ's about this and class 2 radios.

IMO you will be better of getting an aftermarket radio.

The dash and HVAC can be swapped from any model 95-03, it's the same connection.

As far as I know from everything I've been reading etc. all you'll lose when you switch to an aftermarket stereo without getting the module is your door chimes and I think it was onstar if your car came with it. But that was it.
