I have a 2002 Cavy and within the last 2 days, half of the time i start my car it will not go into ANY gear. This hasnt happened while i was driving, only after startup when its idling. I let the car warm up as usual.. The first time it happened, i restarted the car and it was fine, then when it happened again, i attempted to do the same thing but it didnt work, i dunno if its coincidence and it just was time that made it work, but it wouldnt go into gear until i pulled up and released the E-brake. I was told that it could be controlled by vacuum and it temporarily lost the compression for one reason or another. Im not sure, was just curious what you guys thought. I figured it had something to do with the syncros but i dunno, its pretty weird how its random that it will not go in gear but *knock on wood* have never had a problem after i began driving it. Any comments appreciated
i'm assuming its a 5spd?
mine wont go into 1st every now and then, i just take it back to N and do it again
I think it is the synchros. What I would do is just put the clutch in and let the car drift forwards or backwards about an inch. Then it would go into gear with no problem at all. I don't know if I still have that problem since I've had my B&M installed, cause I haven't been able to drive it. But I'll know soon enough. But yes MY 5 speed had the same problem. Also, make sure you pay attention to the synchros. You don't wanna lose gears and burn your clutch up like I did a few years ago.
yea its a 5 speed. mine randomly is picky about first but it goes in after a second try. the problem im having now is it wont go into ANY gear for awhile. i even tried letting it roll and then attempting to put it into first or reverse. and nothing. kinda stumped. when my clutch went in my truck this didnt happen. could it be the clutch? thats what someone had suggested. i didnt think it was only because it works fine while driving and hasnt felt at all like its going. i only have 41k miles atm.
if im not mistaken. the pickyness into first gear is a safety feature so you dont hhrow it into first at like 60 mph. you have to be under a certain speed to go into first. im thinkin its 20mph. dont know what to tell you about the original problem tho.
so it decided to change a lil today while driving, not only was it being weird after start up but during normal driving with each shift it got harder to put into gear until it compltly refused to go in. I pulled over and restarted it, and it was perfectly fine... im stumped...
check your clutch fluid reservoir
I had the exact same problem
with the clutch fully depressed, I would try to put it into gear and it would simply refuse, and the car would actually move forward slightly when I would try.
put some more fluid in your clutch reservoir and try that. It cured my problem in 30 seconds.
you may also want to take a coat hanger and push it down the line just a little to clear out any blockage. be careful not to rip the line, only a little bit is needed thru the straight part.
and just fyi about tranny problems for 5 speeds:
if you're having a problem with a synchro, it'll be isolated to one gear only
if its a fork problem, two gears will act up (1&2, 3&4, 5&R)
if its a shifter cable problem, you'll lose either 1,3,5 or 2,4,R
if every gear is being a problem, you most likely have some issue with the clutch either not disengaging fully or the opposite.
you may want to check out your clutch condition too, jazer.. it might be time for a new one.
When I swapped my engine for the ecotec, my stock throwout bearing turned to dust and my stock clutch was burned up. This was at 60,000miles or so.
also getrags do not like being shifted into first. but for auto X's, if you ever want to downshift into 1st, rev matching usually lets the gear engage. Its not impossible to get a downshift from 2nd to 1st
now mine has that prob with first and 2nd what would cause it to not want to go into gear i dont try to force it anymore i just put it in N and pump the clutch and it goes in fine
could be the release bearing inside the transmission on the way out

Thats sounds like a clutch master or slave problem. My rx7 did the same thing.
Does the shifter throw all the way but it won't go into gear and feels sloppy/loose? Or will the shifter not throw all the way and grinds when attempting? On my Z,one day it just would no longer go into gear. The shifter had full throw but it was loose and sloppy.Thought I'd broke a cable.I took out the console and found that the retaining clip that holds the cables in place on the floor had come off.Shoved it back into place, gave it an extra squeeze to make sure it holds and it's fine now.
And as mentioned in an earlier response, make sure the clutch fluid resevior is full.Mine leaks somewhere,(haven't bothered to find out where yet)and it gets extremely stiff to shift and grinds when forced when the fluid runs low.
