no cat on 97cavalier 2.2

recently bought an 97 cavalier rs with 2.2 engine and 5 speed trans.500 miles latter check engine light comes on.read code 420 problem with cat.crawled under car no cat.will this be a serious problem.

It will be a "problem" till you get it fixed.

But not a huge problem. Your car just isnt going to run like it can and you're going to kill your fuel economy.

not having a cat wont kill your fuel economy your only problem will be passing state inspection / emmisions

It will when the ECU gets mad and puts it in limp mode. Newer cars like to run like crap when there's something wrong with the cat or the rear O2 sensor.

It won't run in limp mode over that. He could probably just do a cheap manual O2 sim and be done with it.
