how to tell the engines apart
Saturday, January 27, 2007 3:54 PM
hey my friend just bought a 96 sunbird with 78k miles and i was gonna switch out the spark plugs for her, change oil, seafoam through vacuum tube. etc.. and i went to buy the plugs and there are two engines. the 2200 and the 2400. i think its a 2200 as the car is not a gt or any other special edition, just base. i dont know anything about j bodies i drive an 89 supra (turbo my baby..)

so yea.. can anyone tell me where exactly it is marked? im guessing its a 2.2 but i dont want to take a chance.

The 2.4L will say in large letter on the top of the engine "TWIN CAM"

Does it have spark plug wires? Meaning can you see them? Also it would be 2.2 and 2.4.

95-97 2.2l OHV:

98-02 2.2l 2200 (with aftermarket intake):

95-02 2.4l Twin Cam (with aftermarket intake):

02-05 2.2l Ecotec:

hope that helps.

Either that, or you'll see a big hole in the block because the #3 rod bearing spun, causing a loss of oil pressure which made a rod go through the block. Or possible a massive coolant leak from a bad water pump.

Sorry... I had to make fun of the junk motor. Since it's always seemed to me like the Z24 guys talk a lot of @!#$ cuz their engine is bigger. And now I have a bigger engine than 2.4L and build my car the way GM SHOULD have built it from the factory.

Easy big fella ... It was a joke. Truth be known, if I wanna go real fast, I climb into my minivan. The Cavy handles better in the twisties though... Geez.
