hey guys im still a newb so i have another newb question.
How do i go about hooking up an Ammeter in my 1998 2.2L OHV Cavalier?

Not sure why you would need one (unless your car has a chronic alt failure problem...), but that's not really my place to ask

only time i've ever seen an ammeter needle move was when the alt. died, and generally you can tell if that happens because everything will dim and your undervolt (battery) light will come on.

im accually building a Mini-stock race car to run on a 4/10 mile clay oval. i think i may just get a volt meter because from what ive been reading the ammeter doesnt show much

An ammeter really only shows whether the battery is charging or discharging. I don't see how this is very helpful in racing. A voltmeter will tell you if the charging circuit is operating correctly (approx 14 volts). Plus a voltmeter connects in parallel with the battery and does not require being connected in series with the charging circuit as does an ammeter. Adding additional series connections to the charging circuit only increases the chances of problems. Go with the voltmeter.
