97 Sunfire 2.2L running rough once warm (no spark on 1 & 4)
Saturday, January 06, 2007 3:48 PM
My 2.2L sunfire recently has been running rough once warmed up. I find that i have no spark on the numbers 1&4 cylinders but only after driving /idling for awhile. I am thinking it must be a coil pack not firing (the 2.2L has two, iirc) but i am not sure if it is the coil itself or the Ignition control module (or something else for that matter). I have narrowed it down to those two since i dont have spark. The car will run but hardly makes any power, however once cooled down it starts and runs/ drives fine. Once it has warmed up, same problem.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
brandon

Also, i just wanted to ask which years are interchangeable for teh coilpacks/ ignition module? i might just grab the whole assembly off of a running car from the wreckers.

Thanks,

Sounds like the ig module. coils usually just quit and never return. Ig modules failures happen either in a higher temperature condition or cold start. Most of the time the whole module goes out. I have had a couple do what your saying and others randomly misfire between both coils at op temp.
If I were you I would just buy a new one because your only going to want to change it once when you find out where it is.

what years? wow there are lots. any third gen with the exception of the ecotec, should about cover it. I think back in the second gens they were the same too. just the bracket was a little different.

For a coilpack, I'm pretty sure you can use just about anything. As long as it has DIS. I believe GM uses the same thing in all the cars. The ICM will be a bit more specific.

Could be a coil though. 1 & 4 use the same coil.

No you dont have to take off the Intake manifold.
If you have a 5 spd its alot easier, Auto's suck. The best way to get to it is from under the car. between the steering rack and body. If you have the right lengths of extensions a wratchet and a 13mm socket, it wont be too bad, just be prepared to cuss alot if you dont have the right lengths of extensions.

and if you ahve a napa in your area that the ICM to them and have them test it. it should be free. ive never been or worked at one that wasnt so. make sure they test it like 3 times tho so its nice and warm. thatl give you the answer if its your ICM

as you can see, there are two bolts on the driver's side, there's also one on the passenger side, the base plate is a general triangle shape, so its on the other side of the coils.

Also, the bolt that holds the coils down is 5mm, IIRC

there are 2 ways to remove it, you can either take out the 4 5mm screws, or the 3 13 mm ones. I have done them both ways. neither way is a whole lot easier, but the 5mm way is easier to line up the screws (alignment pins on ICM) and is easier to take it out in 3 pieces than trying to fit the whole thing out of there.
