HELP!!! Where is my fuel pressure service port?
Saturday, December 23, 2006 12:33 PM
Hey guys,
I think the fuel pump is dying on my wife's 95 Cavalier, but before I spend the big bucks on that thing I want to know for sure.

I have a brand new fuel pressure gauge, but I can't find the fuel pressure service port. Where is it?

She has the 2.2l engine.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

there is a certain fuel pressure gauge setup in the Chiltons manual for the 95 to97 2.2 that would be the best thing to buy

"a certain fuel pressure gauge setup"

Does this mean that my wife's car doesn't already have a fuel pressure service port?

its really hard to explain and im starin right at the diagram but i believe you dont have a fuel rail like my 98 2.4 ,you have a bfp injection system(bottom feed port) maybe you can take off your fuel pressure regulator and gauge the pressure from there or buy a Chiltons manual?

I have a factory service manual, and it's pretty much worthless in this case. I don't see any visual indication of where I can tap in to the fuel line.

There is a large line running up to the bottom of the intake manifold, so that may be the fuel line. I don't see any pressure tap on it, so this may be ugly.

The car idles OK most of the time but runs very rough when much throttle at all is applied. The car just isn't worth simply throwing parts at it, especially when they're as expensive as the fuel pumps on these cars. Ignition or computer problems could probably act exactly the same way, so there's some doubt in my mind that the fuel pump is the problem.

Is there any other way to find out for sure?

It has the OBD-II connector, but no scan tool I've tried works with it. I guess 95 was a screwed up year, so I may not be able to get the answer from the ECM.

The ONLY J to ever come with one was the cars with the Ecotec, your 95 does not have a Schrader valve (fuel pressure test port).

you have to pinch off the flexible hose coming off of the line that attaches to the fuel pressure regulator which is the return line ,on the opposite side of the f.p.r. is your pressure line there should be additional flexible hose attached to that line, there are quick-connect fittings, your fuel pressure gauge kit hooks up inline and you have to pinch off on both sides of the hose, your gauge should be in the middle.the part #'s for the adapter kit are j-29658-100, the relief valve # j-29658-150, the fuel pressure gauge kit# j-29658-d, this is the best i can explain from the diagram in the Chiltons manual.

Is the regulator integrated into the intake manifold/injection assembly on the back of the engine, or is it along the chassis somewhere?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but my jackstands are all tied up under my camaro undergoing a frame-off restoration in the garage, so I can't safely get under her car. I can get to anything from the top, but I can't safely get to the underside until/unless I buy another set of jackstands.

Thanks for all the help!

fpr should be on the right hand side of the intake

I believe I know why your OBDII scanner doesn't work on your car even if it is a 1995. The cigar lighter fuse (15A) on the 95 cavalier also powers the datalink connector your scanner plugs into. When this fuse blows (very common since the cigar lighter is used for things like battery chargers, cell phones, audio equipment, etc) your OBD scanner is no longer powered. Check the fuse and replace it and the scanner should work.

Nope, not the case. 95 was still OBD-1, but it has an OBD-II connector. Even the OBD-II auto's were not fully OBD-II so they could not communicate with off-the-shelf scan tools. 96 was even a wierd year and GM didn't fully get OBD-II compliant on the J's until 97.

I am sure I had power. One of the scan tools (the last one I tried actually) was powered from the OBD port and didn't lose power during the attempted scan.

GM just didn't have their act together on OBD-II according to others who I've consulted. It's a really bad year for those trying to use onboard diagnostics.

At this point I think I'm going to have to try a used fuel pump/tank. The car's value just can't justify buying a new pump at $260+ after tax.

have you tried a new fuel filter yet... i didnt see you mention that any where...

Honestly, I haven't tried that.

Will a fuel filter run bad one day, better the next? I'm not sure, but I assumed no. One day it suddenly died on the road and would not start, and the next it was driven home. Can a fliter do this?

It sure won't hurt anything.

I'll try changing it as soon as the weather improves. Thank you for this very sensible suggestion.

Plugs and oxygen sensor was done about 9 months ago. Wires were done about six months ago.

Strange, the 1995 Cavalier Quad 4 i'm working on can be read with my OBDII scanned. i even pulled a code regarding cat efficiency.
