have any of you ever had to replace the ignition control module for maintenance reasons? i dont mean upgrading (DIS-2) i mean just replacing cause the old one went bad. if so at what mileage did yours go bad.
one other question. what can cause the ignition control module to go bad? just wear and tear or are there any specific things that i can try to avoid?
just curious cause mine died and it was expensive to replace.
i dunno what causes it but it happened to my car. i had to pop start my car to get it home because as soon i started to turn the key the engine would try to turn over. it was acting really weird. i replaced mine around 85k
well thats sort of a relife, i thought it was a rare thing to happen to cars, and i had never heard of it happening on a j.
thanx, i know im not alone
yea it happened on mine. got the part and replaced it. its in the steering column

That's the Ignition switch. The ICM (Ignition Control Module) is on the engine. It's what the coilpacks bolt to.
I've never personally had to replace one. But I think it's a more common thing to go bad on the old 2.8 and 3.1 engines because of where GM decided to mount it. Not sure what causes them to go bad normally. It's an electronic part, so I'd guess it just depends.
Replaced it on my 91 OHV at about 210K....
