Swaping clusters to one with a tach
Sunday, July 30, 2006 7:26 AM
I have an auto 97 Cavalier that has a cluster without a tach and I'm wondering if you can swap clusters with an auto 97 Cavalier RS with a tach. I believe it is possible but I just want to make sure before I buy one.

I think I saw a post some where on here about that, look around a bit. If i remember right, There is a year range that you need to find out if you fit in to. And you just cant pick any year cluster either. There are some other guys that may respond, but make sure that you look around before posting a question because they dont really like double postings.

yea. you need to get one from a 96-99 cav and reprogram it.

Seriously, this is the way to get around it, the theftlock must be reprogrammed, and this is how:
1. Start the car and let it die. The theftlock light will be on, DO NOT TURN THE KEY OFF, OR OPEN ANY DOORS, OR TURN ON ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. Just fold your hands under your arms and wait 10-15 minutes...
2. After the car stalls, the theftlock light will blink. wait until it stops blinking.
3. Wait 1 minute after it stops blinking.
4. Turn the key to off, wait 10 seconds, then start the car again.
You may have to do this 3 times for it to work correctly.

^^^ Actually..... on step number one. It doesnt really matter if you open the doors or not. Or if you turn the key off. As long as you dont remove the key from the ignition before you do the re-learn. You can get back out of the car if you want.

Im pretty sure you can, If you install it and it doesnt work you will have to get the pcm flashed. You will need a vin for one with a tach. If you have a 4 spd auto I have a good vin that you can use, or i can sell ya the pcm. I did the 3.4 swap so I dont need it. Im using the cluster though. You can get a vin off of a site like cars.com for the reprogram.

i swapped my 2k base cluster with a 2004 tach cluster. it was plug-and-play so to speak. my mileage was even saved in the bcm.

I swapped the gauges on my 95 Cavalier with the 3 speed auto trans with no problems. I bought a cluster from a 96 Cavalier on ebay for about $60 bucks, and took it to a local shop. My car had about 100k miles but the new gauges only had 62k. They rolled the mileage forward to match and now if I should ever sell the car, it still shows the actual mileage on it. That NYJBO site MadJack posted has some good information on the model year differences.

Instead of messing with the odometer, tring to roll it, you could have just swapped the odometer from the old cluster to the new one.

Looks good though, maybe thats what I need to do to mine, instead of replacing my aftermarket tach, which is going nuts now.

hey guys i've been attempting to install a new aftermarket tach into my 98 cavalier 2.2 auto w/o a stock tach. if i've been reading correctly i need something like a tach converter. as far i was aware my car doesn't have this. is this the case or can i just tie it in somewhere? i replied to this topic because i didn't think you could just swap a gauge cluster without a tach w/ one that does.

any help would be swell.

thanks

AutoMeter, MSD, SunPro/Actron and others make them. Try Summit Racing, Jegs or you local auto parts store.

do you need a tach convertor if your just swapping out the old cluster for one with a tach? Like DLRosado said in the beginning.

Ok to clear this up... No, you do not need a tach converter. I have a 98 cavy and i swapped out my no-tach cluster for one w/tach. You need to plug the new in and let it sit with the key on for about 5 mins (don't try to start it because the anti-theft thing will kick in and you'll have to restart your wait time). after that it should work. if you have questions just respond.

and does it matter how many speed my tranny is, its a three speed, will the new cluster still work?

My gauge cluster is out of a 4 speed auto and my 3 speed tranny works just fine with it. The shift indicator goes P-R-N-D-3-2-1 however it doesn't shift into 1 on the dash. so yes, the 4 speed cluster will work. you'll just have to deal with the extra indicator spot.
