I have a 96' Cavalier z24. im looking for an engine that I can rebuild slowly.... what year 2.4 ld9's will swap fine with the ecu. I heard somewhere the 96's were like the bad apple...? I dont know... Just need to know what to get from the yard. Thanks.
any year will work. to get it to work seamlessly with your computer, you'll have to swap on the part w/ your EGR or you'll throw a code.
If you get a 97 or up motor and the ecu also, you will be able to use hp tunners to do all kind of adjustments, not posible with our 96īs.
You want to ideally find an engine from 96-98. In 99 they removed the EGR, you can swap it over from your 96 engine though in years from 99-02. If you use any engine other than a 96, and you end up keeping the 96 ECU, you'll want to use the 96 oil pan, since it was the only year to have an oil level sensor. Like I said, any engine from 99 and up, you'll need to swap over the EGR system, including the intake manifold, EGR solenoid and piping, exhaust manifold, and exhaust gasket. The 99+ also have different injectors, so you'll want to use the ones from your 96 so they plug right into your ECU. The 99+ has a different knock sensor, so you'll have to drill out the knock sensor hole and mount your old knock sensor into it.
