Getting Trunk Open
Sunday, September 24, 2006 1:52 PM
I have keyless entry to my z24 (1998) and usualy use the remote to open the trunk. My battery died after we put bags in the drunk. Thats when i realized I dont have a trunk open button in the car. Is that possible? Ive searched but have found no such trunk opening button. Pulling the seat down is the only way I can get into my trunk? I know j's were on the cutting edge of tech, and options, but NO truck button? Can someone confirm my buttonless car, or my sheer stupidity? Thanks

Uh, use the key?

If the battery died, then the trunk open button would be useless, even if you had one...

I don't think 98's had a trunk button but instead a lever. Look next to your seat. If it is not there they just use the key unless you shaved the lock.

Nope, my 98 has the keyless, and the key, and thats it. No other levers or switches or magic buttons.

Just what kind of bags did you put in the drunk that would cause your battery to die? Sounds a little strange to me......

Sedans mainly had this option.

Yeah, use the key.. it's not as fun as pushing a button, but it's just as effective.

Sorry I left out alot of info. We put luggage bags in the trunk, fairly large. The battery in the remote died, and for some crazy reason my key doesnt open my drunk. Either the locks been changed out, or I dont have the correct key. Also sometimes, after ive been driving the car, and i push the drunk button, the trunk area makes a noise, but nothing happens? Any insite about that? Thanks, you guys are life savers at times.

If you have the original keys for the car, than the lock is messed up or as you stated , has been chenged. Have a locksmith rekey the lock so you can use your key next time. As for no interior opener in your 98Z, mine was the same way till I added a switch myself. I too thought it was stupid that GM didn't put someway to open the trunk from the inside of the vehicle. You will also notice that when the car is running, you cannot open the trunk using the key fob. That is a safety feature.

time to crawl through the back seat like I had to and try to get it open from there. I tried prybars and everything, it messed up some of the paint and still didnt open.

good luck

I got another idea, you could get a new battery and open it with your key fob. Yay for me.

^^ thats what im thinkin..

or u can crawl in and unbolt ur latch from the trunklid(i think)
also i beleive on Ebay and like Advanced and Auto Zone u can buy the switches/buttons for the trunk.. My 96 Z has a lever but i mainly use my keyless entry aswell.. cant use my key either cuz i shaved it off lol

If replacing the battery in the FOB doesnt work.. u sure when u put the bag in u didnt knock off one of the tension bars and not allowing ur trunk to lift up with ease? Those tension bars transfer the weight of the trunk.. i had one of mine fall out and u have to lift the trunk up.. its not as light as u would think.. its got some weight to it.. just another idea incase ur button doesnt work.

lets count how many times we can mistake the word trunk for drunk and truck

go to rite-aid, cvs, walgreens, etc.... and buy a new battery for the remote. i know it sounds hard but it works. recently my dads trailblazer was the same way. the remote stopped working and it wouldnt unlock the doors. man was it a bitch to climb in and out of the window everytime i wanted to drive it.

IF you just want to get it open, pop down the back seat and crawl back into the trunk. In the middle of the lock area, there's a slot that the tab from the lock goes into. Stick a screwdriver into that and turn it, might bend the tab from the lock a little but it will open.

some have them and some dont. i know there were some people (like you) saying they dont have them. my cav has one like dave said, right on the side of the seat, a little lever to pull. my moms has a button on her lower dash and my sisters was the same way before she got rid of hers

I haven't found one on my 2001 Z. The fob button works sometimes when the key is in the ignition. Before this car i had never heard of a car not having a trunk release in the car. GM / american car makers for ya.

Like mentioned above, put an electric switch in yourself.Go to the boneyard, and pop out a power trunk release or a power gas cap release button from something.Run a wire from the electric plug at the trunk release,in the trunk loom, under the back seat ,the carpet, and console to the firewall.Make sure it won't get jammed in the shifter.Drill a hole in the glovebox,or as I did,in the bottom of the dash beside the radio housing(where no thieves would think to look).Next run a wire from the lighter live feed and the wire to the trunk out the hole in the dash.Crimp a couple of connectors on the ends of the wires, hook them to the button and pop the button into the dash. With the constant live feed you can pop the trunk without having to have the key in the ignition.Takes about 1/2 an hour.

Good idea, just be sure you fuse the hot wire from the lighter socket to the button. It would be BAD if the wire rubbed on something metal and shorted.

As an edit to above, fuse it as close to the lighter socket as possible. A 10 amp fuse ought to be enough, I don't think those power trunk release poppers draw much juice.
