Does anyone know whats involved in replacing a head gasket on a 97 sunfire GT? My girlfriend just blew hers up and I was wondering if it is something that I can do in a weekend. Thanks.

its do-able in a weekend but its very time consuming. im sure there are plenty of threads on it. just look around
you probley can do it in a day its not hard to do.
Depends...... When I do something like that I usually try to consider that the job will run over to monday or tuesday. Reason being, is that the head will probably need to be planed. And machine shops will probably be closed over the weekend.
if you screw up putting the cams back in, you'd be screwed. just take it apart and mark every position for everything that moves. i'm pretty sure you have to take the engine all the way out and pulll the crank pulley, unbolt the chain casing unbol the cam gears derail the chain unbolt the cam housing and on the head there is 5 head bolts on each side... take them out and throw them away. buy headgasket, and head bolts (it's pretty cheap) $65 for everything. you need a torque wrench start from the middle and move outward in offsets. it's 43ft/lbs and a 90 degree extra i'd finger tighten them all down when i start. make sure all the gaskets would reseal and use black silicone arund them but not for the headgasket.
on my quad4 some of it must of been tin. i'm not sure the cam towers have to have silicone on them.
but put it all back togather to spec and it wouldn't hurt if you vacummed and clean any dirt on your pistons and valves. from carbon deposits or from dirty sparkplug replacements.
It's pretty easy as long as you dont screw up the cam timing
have fun timing the engine
