99 ecu?
Saturday, September 02, 2006 8:59 AM
Does anyone know if an auto ecu from a 99 cav will work on a 97 5 speed car? I need a 99 computer for the egr delete and all I can find are auto 99 computers. Right now I have an egr simulator and it's making my car run like sh*t.

97 and 99 are the same computer. Just the programming is different.
Im not sure what you want to do will work. Im pretty sure the 99 uses a BCM and the 97 doesnt. which would mean that the 99 programming would have 2 serial data lines out of the PCM and the 97 only has one that goes to the diagnostic port. If you program the 97 PCM to the 99 non egr programming There may be a big wiring issue out of the PCM. The wires may be in the wrong spots causing nothing to work.
Why are you dealing with a EGR delete any way? Dou you have a 99 engine in there? There may be a different approact to your problem. As it looks your not going to be able to do what you want because of wiring issues.
Let us know some more details on what exactly you have.

I took off the egr for the HO manifold swap. I have read that a 99 computer will clear the check engine light with some minor modifications. I really just want to know if an auto 99 will work on my car.

The 97 pcm is the same, you dont have to buy one just take it to a dealer with a vin for a 5 spd and have them reprogram it. You should check the pin outs of the 97 and 99 pcm before you go any further though.

99 did not have a BCM, BCM's didn't start until 2000.

I appreciate the help, but I still don't know if a 99 auto computer will work on a stick 97. Thanks.

Go to www.carpart.com
look up the engine computers. If your service # is the same its the same one.
Your going to have to get it programmed unless your 100% sure of what It came out of.
Auto and stick take the same PCM with different programming.

I was wrong on the bcm in the 99. Shifted says it doesnt have one. So you should be good to go with the 97 PCM that you have.

Can any one else verify the 97 and 99 PCM's are the same for Melaza.

Why not just take your car to a GM dealer and have them re-flash the 97 PCM with the 99 program, as Joe already suggested?

It is the same part... number 16228016.

The auto computer will throw a host of codes, since the auto trans isn't hooked up.

If I do this don't I have to do the knock sensor swap? If I don't then re-flash it is.

Whats this knock sensor talk?
Are you saying that the 99 doesnt use a knock sensor or the 97 doesnt? My 01 has one, its pin 33 of plug C1 on the pcm. Dark blue wire.

The style of the sensor changed in 99, its larger and uses 2 wires in 98- I believe.

Oh.
Ill check my wifes 98 when she gets home later.

Melaza, If Im getting this right , you are going with the 99 5 spd programming in your 97 car because the 99 is non egr. So your pin outs of the PCM have to match the 99 programming. Whether its the knock sensor, or anything else. From what shifted is saying , sounds like your going to have to add a wire or 2.
Since your not needing the egr wires, you can use those plug ends for your added wires. Do yourself a favor, solder all wire connections, it will save lots of grief later.
Ill do some pin out comparisons for you tomorrow at work.

My printer is messed up at work. Out of ink again. If i can get them printed next week sometime I can scan them and post them on here. The program wont let me copy/paste. I did get into the program to find out that the 99 uses pin 32 grey and pin 34 DK blue for the Knock sensor. the 97 uses only the pin 34 dk blue. These are in C1 blue plug.

Here are the diagrams. there are three of each but the first and last are the only ones that have the pcm pin outs. They arent the best quality, Im still fighting with the printer.
