Okay clutch/manual trans problems can be diagnosed simply by what the car is doing, and is the clutch engaged or not.

So you say clutch disengaged sound, clutch engaged no sound.

Clutch engaged no sound, means the pilot bearing is fine. However like the above poster stated, it is most likely you throw out bearing, also called a release bearing.

You will be removing the clutch to replace it, it is between the pressure plate and flywheel I do believe.

a friend of mine mis-shifted his talon at the track one day (3rd to 2nd, data logger stopped at 10k rpm's) and had a horrible rattle sound while the clutch was out, but ran fine and the noise stopped while the clutch was in, we pulled the engine and found that 4 out of 7 fly wheel bolts had backed off and were rattling, when you'd put the clutch in it the pressure plate would sandwich them quiet. May not be your issue, but possible

The throwout bearing isnt between the pressure plate and flywheel. It sits on the input shaft right up against the tranny and disengages the pressure plate.

Okay but it disengaged the pressure plate which connectso the flywheel, which is mounted on the engine.

The input shaft is always connected from the engine to the trans, just that the pressure plate isnt always engaged agaisnt the flyweheel, so what I said was correct.

my car does this from time to time. i have a ACT clutch and Spec flywheel.

i am not worried. i have a newer throw out bearing. sometimes it makes alot of noise, sometimes it dont.

when it makes that noise, try pushing the clutch in and letting it out again, see if it goes away.

i wouldnt worry about it until you cant shift, or move. lol

Rob you're incorrect. You don't have to take off the clutch to replace the TOB. The other dude was right.

O noes!

From engine to trans...

Flywheel -> Friction Disc -> Pressure Plate -> Release Bearing -> Clutch Fork

if the fork pressed on the pressure plate, it wouldnt work at all, the release bearing is inbetween the fork and fingers on the pressure plate so that the pressure plate can spin with the flywheel.

The J throw out bearings are known for making this noise. I have taken a car mkaing this noise to 129k and was fine. Also turn your A/C off (if it was on), and see if the noise goes away. The A/C compressor are noisey as well.

I have the same problem. I have a stage 2 SPEC clutch and SPEC flywheel on the getrag (2001). I just contributed it to the fact i changed something so the noise is bound to change. It runs fine so i dont worry.

Same here... new TO bearing and it still makes that noise. I just ignore it half the time

mine does the same thing

nothing to worry about

It's a simple reason. At least on my NVG and on the Isuzu - the throwout bearing isn't bolted down... so it rattles against the pressure plate and bell housing. Sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's nothing

Don't worry about it.

Same thing...Spec III and Spec flywheel...had the noise since day one and had it after the new parts went in...even swapped the TOB and it's still there....

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

I don't know how old this post is but I might check my Input Bearing and in a few rare Cases i've heard how a loose arm can make that noise. You might check it out

It did it when I had the Isuzu and it does it now with my NVG tranny. Both new throwout bearings. It's just how they are. Don't worry about it.
